New Splotter title - Bailiff of Boscoop announced

The word "Splotter" is written below.Fans of heavyweight strategy games have something new to keep an eye on, as Splotter Spellen has officially announced its next project: Bailiff of Boscoop. Known for its deliberate release schedule and highly complex designs, the studio returns following Horseless Carriage (2023), continuing its tradition of deep, low-luck strategy experiences.

Set in the late Middle Ages and early modern period, Bailiff of Boscoop takes players to the Rhineland region within the historic County of Holland - now part of the Netherlands. The game’s announcement is accompanied by a characterful narrative, centring on tensions between local families, rising water levels, and political entanglements involving courts and land disputes. It sets the tone for a game that leans heavily into systems and consequences rather than randomness.

Mechanically, the game supports 2–5 players, each taking control of a local family aiming to expand their influence. Over the course of a lengthy 150–240 minute session, players will claim land, develop roles within the community, and navigate shifting power structures. Family members can rise to positions such as village founders, judges, or even more niche roles like duck dealers - small thematic touches that sit within a broader economic and territorial framework.

As expected from Splotter, the focus appears to be on strategic planning and player-driven outcomes. Victory is determined by land ownership at the end of the game, reinforcing a long-term, efficiency-focused approach rather than short bursts of tactical play.

Some additional details shared by the publisher help clarify the design direction. The game uses the historical spelling “Boscoop,” reflecting period maps rather than the modern “Boskoop.” There’s also a light nod to regional flavour, with elements like the “Beauty of Boskoop” apple and references to well-known Dutch cheeses, including those associated with Gouda.

Interestingly, while the setting might suggest negotiation-heavy gameplay - particularly with roles like judges - the designers have opted against that route. Early variants explored more negotiation, but these were ultimately scaled back to keep turns moving at a steady pace. The result aims to balance meaningful decisions with a smoother flow, even as the game retains Splotter’s trademark edge of player interaction and, by design, a degree of systemic unfairness.

Pre-orders are not yet open, but the publisher has indicated more information will follow. For now, Bailiff of Boscoop looks to be another considered addition to Splotter’s catalogue - one that stays true to its reputation for intricate, demanding strategy games without straying from its core design philosophy.
