Tolkien fans everywhere are continually eating well at the board game table, as more Lord of the Rings IP continues to get made in the tabletop world, as Lord of the Rings: The Kings Gambit was announced on the 25th March.
Being released in partnership between Restoration Games and Space Cowboys, Lord of the Rings: The Kings Gambit will be a revival of the beloved classic board game Star Wars: The Queens Gambit (it has nothing to do with chess), but this time we’re moving from a Galaxy far far away to Middle Earth, as publishers continue to try and convince me to part ways with my money!
With deluxe and standard editions due to be available, (deluxe in 2026 and standard in 2027), this is a very good gambit being made by both Restoration Games and Space Cowboys, and it promises to be a huge hit for board game and LOTR fans, a crossover fandom that continually flourishes.
The Ultimate Grail Game
Lord of the Rings: The Kings Gambit is a joint publication by Restoration Games (of Unmatched and Thunder Road fame), and Space Cowboys (which boasts Jaipur and Skull in its back catalogue).
Like the original The Queens Gambit, this LOTR reimagining will feature sprawling, epic battles across multiple fields of play, with Middle Earth offering up a plethora of epic battlefields to do battle, including Pelennor Fields as the Riders of Rohan clash with hordes of Orcs, or in Minas Tirith as the Gondorians defend their home against Sauron’s shadow forces.
Of course as well you can relive the epic battles and struggles of the Fellowship, including Frodo and Sams perilous journey through Mordor to the fires of Mount Doom.
With legendary designer Rob Daviau on board as well as co-founder of Restoration Games, this game looks incredibly exciting, as it promises in its press release that it’s ‘packed with detailed figures, thrilling decisions, and countless ways to win, this game delivers the ultimate experience for fans of The Lord of the Rings and board gaming alike.’
With the two publishers working in tandem, Restoration Games will handle the crowdfunding of a limited edition deluxe version of the game to be released later this year, with upgraded components including what is sure to be amazing 3D representations of Minas Tirith and Mordor.
Then in 2027, Space Cowboys will release the retail edition of the game through Asmodee’s global distribution, which will still feature the same striking art and gameplay as the limited edition release this year.
One does not simply remake Star Wars: The Queens Gambit
With this announcement, I really can’t wait for more information about Lord of the Rings: The Kings Gambit. Two of the things I love the most, LOTR and board games, have always been a match made in heaven, with amazing titles like Duel for Middle Earth and War of the Ring being among my favourites, and The Kings Gambit really sounds like it has the potential to best them all.
I am also a huge fan of Restoration Games work, they have an amazing history of reimaging and bringing back to life older games, Unmatched is probably the best head to head game out there, and so I have full confidence they will deliver again.
And this is coming from someone who doesn’t know all that much about the original 2000 release, Star Wars: The Queens Gambit.
In researching this, it sounded like an amazing game where you got to recreate the four key battles at the end of The Phantom Menace, with Star Wars probably being the only existing IP with more board games out there than Lord of the Rings!
But Restoration Games has probably wisely steered away from the polarising original Star Wars and taken a swing at Lord of the Rings, and it will be very interesting to see what they do with it.
And with deluxe and retail editions available, you can make a decision which one most interests you (and your wallet) when more information becomes available, which I will be looking out for with eager anticipation over the coming months!
