Keep the Heroes Out: dungeon defense board game hits Nintendo Switch

Monsters vs. Heroes, Now on Console

The asymmetrical dungeon defense board game Keep the Heroes Out is making the leap from tabletop to Nintendo Switch this December. Brueh Games, the creators of the original board game, have teamed up with YarnCat Games to bring Luís Brueh’s strategic hit to digital players, offering both local and online co-op. Mark your calendars: the game launches December 9, 2025.
In Keep the Heroes Out, you step into the boots—or claws—of dungeon-dwelling monsters defending their treasures from waves of invading heroes. Each player selects a monster with unique abilities, a personal starting deck, and a different number of minions to command. It’s cooperative strategy at its finest: working together to fend off the heroic intruders is essential if you want to keep your hoard intact.

Turn-Based Strategy With a Twist

Gameplay revolves around card-driven turns. Players use the icons on their cards to take actions, split moves between multiple monsters, and plan their defenses carefully. At the end of each turn, hands are replenished to five cards, and the heroes respond, launching attacks on your dungeon. Monsters may fall—but unlike in traditional dungeon crawlers, death isn’t permanent. Lost minions can return, though any treasure lost to heroes is gone for good, raising the stakes for every decision.

As players progress, decks can be upgraded and loot cards crafted to enhance strategic options. The game blends different monster roles—crowd control, defense, or support—into evolving puzzles that keep every match fresh. Each dungeon level features unique layouts, special rules, and scenario-specific cards, from collecting potion ingredients for Olga the Witch to wacky “battle of the bands” events.

From Kickstarter to Switch

Keep the Heroes Out was originally funded via Kickstarter, where it quickly found an enthusiastic audience. Luís Brueh, founder of Brueh Games, reflected on the journey: “The board game community embraced it wholeheartedly, and the most common question we got was, ‘Will there be a digital version?’ Now there is. Players can team up remotely or test their wits against the AI, and it’s all thanks to the incredible support of our Kickstarter backers.”

With its approachable mechanics, dynamic dungeon challenges, and the charm of monsters defending their hard-earned treasures, Keep the Heroes Out promises to be a must-play for both board game fans and newcomers alike. The Switch version adds flexibility for co-op gaming anywhere, ensuring that heroes beware—your dungeon is ready.
