Guild Wars is getting a card game!

Guild Wars fans have had a busy month already, but ArenaNet is not stopping with the announcement of Guild Wars 3!

The studio has now officially revealed Mistbound, a brand-new digital card game set in the world of Tyria. Developed by NC alongside bilibili, the upcoming title takes the Guild Wars universe into competitive card battles for the first time.

And unlike a lot of digital card games currently out there, this one is trying a few different ideas with how matches actually play out.

Not Just Another Card Game

According to ArenaNet, Mistbound is inspired by the original card game influences behind Guild Wars itself.

Studio head Colin Johanson explained that the goal was to give fans another way to play together while bringing familiar Guild Wars characters, creatures and locations into a competitive card game format.

The biggest twist is the battlefield system.

Instead of cards simply sitting in fixed positions, Mistbound uses a tactical 5x3 grid where units and commanders can move around during battle. That means positioning becomes part of the strategy alongside building decks and managing abilities.

It sounds like ArenaNet wants the game to feel a bit more dynamic than the usual “place card and wait” structure that many digital card games use.

Strategy Without Overcomplicated Cards

The developers also say the movement system is designed to shift complexity away from the cards themselves.

Producer Hwang Sunwoo explained that some card games become difficult to follow because individual cards end up overloaded with effects and mechanics. Instead, Mistbound tries to create depth through positioning and battlefield control.

That means mechanics like knockbacks, pulls and flanking attacks will all play a role during matches.

Players will also be able to use well-known Guild Wars characters as commanders, each bringing their own abilities and tactical advantages to battles.

For longtime fans of the MMO, that will probably be one of the biggest selling points.

Familiar Faces Return

ArenaNet also confirmed that Mistbound will feature music contributions from original Guild Wars composers alongside voiced appearances from returning characters.

That should help the game feel closely tied to the wider Guild Wars universe rather than just using the name for branding.

At the moment, screenshots suggest the game is leaning heavily into the fantasy style and world design fans already know from Tyria, although the actual gameplay structure looks much more focused on tactical positioning than traditional MMORPG systems.

Could This Become Competitive?

There is also a strong multiplayer focus behind the project.

The involvement of bilibili suggests community features and player feedback are going to be a major part of development, with the publishers already talking about direct player input helping shape the game.

It would not be surprising to see Mistbound pushed as a competitive title as well, especially given how successful games like Hearthstone became in both streaming and esports spaces.

Whether it reaches that level is another question entirely, but ArenaNet clearly sees room for Guild Wars outside the MMO genre.

Guild Wars Expands Again

The timing of the reveal is interesting too.

ArenaNet only recently confirmed Guild Wars 3 earlier this month, making Mistbound the second major Guild Wars announcement in a very short space of time.

That suggests NC and ArenaNet are preparing for a much bigger expansion of the franchise over the next few years rather than keeping it focused entirely on MMORPGs.

Digital card games are still an incredibly competitive market, so Mistbound will need something genuinely different to stand out long term. The movement-based gameplay could end up being that hook if it feels good in practice.

Right now though, it is still very early days.

There is currently no release date confirmed for Mistbound, although it seems unlikely the game will launch before 2027.
