Escape the Dark Castle is back with new Second Edition

It’s time to grab your dice, light your lantern, and steel your nerves – because Escape the Dark Castle is back from the depths. Themeborne Games has officially revealed Escape the Dark Castle: Second Edition, alongside a brand-new standalone adventure, Escape the Dark Forest.

Originally released eight years ago, Escape the Dark Castle became a cult hit thanks to its art, eerie atmosphere, and simple, story-driven dungeon crawl gameplay. Players take on the roles of unfortunate prisoners trying to flee the cursed halls of the Castle, flipping chapter cards to reveal monsters, traps, and trials in an adventure that feels like an old-school D&D nightmare – complete with custom dice rolls and group do-or-die moments.

Now, Themeborne is overhauling the game for a new generation. The Second Edition promises to refine and expand everything that made the original so beloved. Expect a complete visual overhaul, better balance and difficulty scaling, and loads of new mechanics, including ranged weapons, item durability, and a Stamina system that reduces bad luck without dulling the danger. The dice and prisoner designs are also getting an update, giving this modern reimagining a polished yet faithful edge.

Themeborne says the new edition “brings our first-ever design up to the higher standards the series has gone on to set since its original release,” marking the start of a refreshed product line that replaces the first edition entirely. No reprints or restocks of the original game will be made – so what’s left online is your last chance to grab a piece of that spooky history.

Joining the relaunch is Escape the Dark Forest, a standalone expansion that can also be linked directly to Castle Second Edition for a continuous campaign. Start by escaping the Castle, then stumble into the haunted Forest beyond to continue your adventure — complete with new threats and thematic challenges. Themeborne has confirmed both games will feature partial compatibility, though neither will work with the original first-edition content or expansions.

There’s no confirmed Gamefound launch date yet, but excitement among fans is already brewing.

With new art, new mechanics, and the same haunting charm that made the original unforgettable, Escape the Dark Castle: Second Edition and Escape the Dark Forest are shaping up to be essential for horror-loving tabletop adventurers.

Get ready – the doors of the Dark Castle creak open once again in 2025… and who knows what lurks behind them.
