Descent has finally become a video game!

Dark fantasy-themed game cover with "Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent" text over a glowing, mystical wolf with fierce eyes and a fiery symbol above.

After years as one of tabletop gaming’s best-known fantasy worlds, Terrinoth has officially made the jump to video games with the surprise launch of Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent!

The new tactical RPG is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Mac, bringing the world of Descent into a full digital dungeon-crawling adventure for the first time.

Developed by Artefacts Studio and published by New Tales, the game blends turn-based combat, co-op play and fantasy storytelling while staying closely tied to the board game series that inspired it.

A New Adventure

Rather than adapting an existing campaign, Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent tells a completely original story set before the events of Descent: Legends of the Dark.

The game follows a growing threat spreading across Terrinoth, alongside rumours of a powerful relic that several dangerous groups are trying to claim first.

Players build a party of adventurers and head into dungeons, ruins and monster-filled strongholds while uncovering more about what is happening across the world.

For longtime Descent fans, it is a chance to revisit familiar locations and themes in a much larger RPG format.

Eight Heroes

The game launches with eight playable heroes, each featuring their own abilities, combat styles and character backgrounds.

As players progress through the campaign, heroes can level up skills, unlock stronger gear and combine abilities together during battles.

The campaign itself is spread across four chapters and includes twenty dungeons, alongside side quests and fully voiced story scenes.

Interestingly, character interactions can also change depending on which heroes you bring into the party, giving players a reason to experiment with different team combinations across multiple playthroughs.

Tactical Combat

One thing the developers seem especially focused on is accessibility.

While Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent uses tactical RPG systems like positioning, elevation and line of sight, the game avoids becoming overly complicated with endless layers of mechanics or management systems.

Instead, combat revolves around combining hero abilities and setting up powerful Synergy attacks between party members.

That approach actually fits the tabletop roots of Descent quite well. The original board games always aimed to balance accessible gameplay with tactical depth, and the video game version seems to be following the same philosophy.

Built For Co-Op

Although the full campaign can be played solo, this definitely sounds like a game designed with multiplayer in mind.

Up to four players can team up online, and the game allows players to join ongoing sessions even after a dungeon has already started.

The overall mission structure also sounds fairly manageable compared to larger RPGs, with many sessions designed to fit into a single evening rather than requiring huge time commitments.

That gives it a very similar feel to a traditional board game night, just in digital form.

A Big Moment For Descent Fans

For years, fans of Descent have wondered whether the series would eventually expand beyond tabletop gaming.

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent is now the first proper video game adaptation built directly around the setting, and it feels like a fairly natural next step for the franchise.

And with full voice acting, online co-op and an original storyline, this is clearly aiming to be more than just a small side project for existing board game players.

Available Now

Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Mac for £34.99.

Whether you are already familiar with Descent or completely new to Terrinoth, this looks like one of the more interesting tabletop-to-video-game adaptations we have seen in a while!
