CMON eyes crowdfunding return after heavy losses

Once one of the most prolific crowdfunding success stories in tabletop gaming, publisher CMON is facing a challenging 2026 as it navigates significant financial losses and attempts to stabilise its operations while continuing to fulfil delayed projects.

According to the company’s recently disclosed annual results, CMON reported losses approaching $20 million in 2025, a dramatic downturn that has raised questions about its long-term financial footing. An independent auditor cited in the forthcoming 2025 annual report warned that these conditions could cast “significant doubt” on the company’s ability to continue as a going concern, although CMON’s board remains optimistic.

The publisher’s financial strain stems largely from multiple undelivered crowdfunding campaigns, which account for liabilities on its books until they are fulfilled. The company paused new crowdfunding launches and game development last year amid economic uncertainty, particularly due to fluctuating tariff environments affecting overseas manufacturing, and has since been working to deliver outstanding titles.

Plans for 2026: Crowdfunding and Project Updates

Despite its financial setbacks, CMON is signalling a possible return to crowdfunding later in 2026. Company leadership has indicated that resuming crowdfunding campaigns is part of its strategy to generate revenue and re-engage its community of backers, many of whom have been waiting well beyond original delivery estimates for games they supported.

Meanwhile, CMON’s own project update page shows progress on several previously delayed games. Titles such as Dune: Desert War, DCeased, DC Super Heroes United, Mordred, The Adventurers, and Super Fantasy Brawl Reborn are in various stages of production and shipping, with some core components already completed and others moving toward mass manufacturing.

The company is also adjusting its fulfilment approach, prioritising retail orders first to help fund ongoing production; a controversial decision among backers but one CMON says is necessary to ensure eventual delivery of all content.

A Tumultuous Backstory

CMON’s struggles did not begin overnight. Over the past two years, the publisher has faced a series of setbacks, including layoffs, halted development, and the sale or licensing of several intellectual properties as it sought to stem losses and reallocate resources.

In addition, earlier reports documented projected losses in the millions and the company’s shift away from new project launches amid a difficult global market for tabletop production.

What This Means for Backers and the Community

For fans and backers of CMON’s games, the coming months will be crucial. The company’s ability to resume crowdfunding successfully and deliver on long-awaited projects will likely determine whether it can regain momentum and trust within the hobby community.

While leadership remains cautiously hopeful about CMON’s future, the financial realities and backlog of fulfilment work present significant challenges. As the company works toward its 2026 goals, players and supporters will be watching closely to see whether one of the tabletop industry’s most ambitious publishers can weather this storm and emerge stronger.
