Chaosium Revives Pendragon 1st Edition for 40th Anniversary

Some RPGs are legendary not just for what they do at the table, but for how they changed the way we think about games altogether. Back in 1985, Pendragon did exactly that.

Instead of just rolling dice to see if your sword hit the orc, Greg Stafford’s Pendragon brought in ideas like Traits and Passions – mechanics that tied your knight’s behaviour and emotions directly into play. It was immersive, and it stood apart from the fantasy crowd of the time.

And now, four decades later, Chaosium has announced it’s bringing that original Pendragon 1st Edition back to life.

A Double Celebration

The timing couldn’t be more fitting: 2025 marks 40 years of Pendragon and 50 years of Chaosium. To celebrate, the publisher is re-releasing the game in its original form, while also digging into the archives for some bonus content to sweeten the deal.

So what you’ll be getting is both a historical artefact and a fully playable RPG. A chance to see the game as it first appeared, while also enjoying some extra material that never saw the light of day.

Back to the Source

Sure, Chaosium only just released the brand-new edition of Pendragon earlier this year, streamlining the rules for modern sensibilities. But this re-release is a different beast. You’ll get to wrestle with your knight’s virtues and vices, watch generations rise and fall, and struggle through the messy, glorious business of Arthurian legend!

Kickstarter Bound

Of course, this being 2025, the project is heading straight to Kickstarter.

Why This Matters

We’re in the middle of an old school renaissance, where players are rediscovering that sometimes the best way to innovate is to revisit what made games great in the first place.

For Pendragon, that means honour, duty, passion, and legacy—things that most RPGs of the ’80s didn’t even attempt to tackle. Four decades later, it’ll be fascinating to see if the first edition still hits as hard as it did back then.
