CGE Donates All Profits from Codenames: Back to Hogwarts to Charity

Czech Games Edition (CGE) have made a huge announcement: 100% of profits from their new Codenames: Back to Hogwarts will go directly to charities supporting trans communities.

The announcement came after a wave of criticism from fans and industry voices who highlighted the issues of licensing a Harry Potter product, given J.K. Rowling’s views.

CGE admitted in their 8th August statement that they had misjudged the situation:

“We are all devastated that the project we were so excited to share with you caused harm instead of joy. Over time, the harmful views of the story’s creator have escalated into harmful actions. We apologise unreservedly for not doing more to consider that possibility, and for subsequently announcing the game without taking pre-emptive actions to mitigate the pain it would cause.”

What They’ve Committed To

  • All profits from Back to Hogwarts will go to trans charities.
  • The donation will equal or even exceed the licensing fee paid for the Harry Potter rights.
  • The community will help guide which charities receive the funds, with priority given to those offering direct, practical support to trans people.

A Positive Step Forward

While the controversy has been tough, CGE’s final decision has been widely recognised as a meaningful way to take responsibility and redirect support where it really matters. Many fans have praised the publisher for listening, adapting, and ultimately turning a difficult situation into an opportunity for genuine good. It’s a reminder that the tabletop community can use its voice to push for positive change – and that publishers can respond in ways that strengthen trust and inclusivity.

The Bigger Picture

Codenames, CGE’s smash-hit word game, has sold over 15 million copies worldwide since its 2015 launch and already has spin-offs ranging from Party to Marvel editions. Back to Hogwarts was meant to be a fun new entry – but it’s clear the context has shifted since Rowling’s comments became a sticking point in fandom and beyond.

By pledging profits to trans causes, CGE are aiming to turn a misstep into meaningful action.
