Netflix is rolling the dice (or rather, placing the settlements) on a major new adaptation – this time bringing one of the most iconic modern board games to life. The streaming giant has announced plans to develop a full slate of scripted and unscripted projects inspired by Catan, the bestselling German board game from designer Klaus Teuber and publisher Asmodee.
If you’ve ever lost a friendship over a stolen brick or a blocked road, you already know Catan isn’t your average tabletop experience. Since its debut back in 1995, the game has become a global phenomenon – selling over 45 million copies and being translated into more than 40 languages. It’s credited with kickstarting the “modern board game” boom and remains a favourite gateway game for new hobbyists everywhere.
Now, Netflix is looking to trade sheep for screen time, with plans to turn the island of Catan into a full-fledged entertainment universe. The streamer has confirmed that the deal includes not just a live-action TV series, but also the potential for films, animated projects, and even video game tie-ins.
Trading Resources for Storylines
Catan is known for its blend of strategy, negotiation, and the occasional backstabbing deal at the trading table – perfect ingredients for on-screen drama. In the game, players take on the role of settlers, gathering resources like wood, wheat, and ore to build roads, cities, and settlements while avoiding the dreaded robber. Translating that push-and-pull of cooperation and competition into storytelling could lead to some seriously binge-worthy tension.
Production duties are being shared by a powerhouse team: Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber – sons of the late Klaus Teuber, who created the original game. They’ll be joined by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (Barbarian, It), bringing serious Hollywood clout to the table.
Netflix’s Next Big Play in Game Adaptations
This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into the world of tabletop adaptations. The streamer recently took a swing at The Werewolves of Millers Hollow with the adventure-fantasy film Family Pack and has a reality competition based on Monopoly currently in development. But Catan marks perhaps its most ambitious board game crossover yet – one with a rich lore and a massive, dedicated fanbase.
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, hinted that Catan’s mix of strategy and tension makes it ripe for drama: “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for storytelling. We knew landing this deal would be as game-changing as a well-placed settlement.”
A New Frontier for Asmodee
Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, echoed the excitement: “Millions have enjoyed Catan since it was created, and for many, it’s a gateway to modern board gaming. Seeing it expand into a larger universe is thrilling – it’s proof that board gaming is now a true part of pop culture.”
For Catan fans, this could be the ultimate expansion pack – one that swaps dice rolls for dramatic arcs and resource cards for rich, character-driven storytelling. Whether it’s a sweeping adventure series or a cutthroat trading drama, one thing’s for sure: Netflix is settling in for a big win.
