Caladium – Developer Q&A

White gothic text on a blood-red background reads "Caladun" with "Honour in Blood" below. The design evokes a dark, intense, and dramatic tone.

Whilst at UKGE a few weeks ago I stumbled upon a game I’d seen some Facebook Ads for and had already gained an invested interest in. The game is Caladium, a gladiator battle game that scratches an itch for me as a gamer and a massive fan of Roman culture.
Although I didn’t get much time to check out the game I did manage to reach out to creator Danny to do a quick Q&A and talk about his creation.

Tell me a bit about Caladium.

Caladium was a created almost on a whim, the original thought was wondering if a game existed where the points to buy items was your carry capacity. I was at my weekly board game club and with borrowed things from different games (a Bloodbowl board, Flintloque minis and a notebook and pen) i started messing about with base ideas. It's something like the original idea as after trying things they never worked out but it was fun to play, and friends helped me get it to the point it is now. It's in its finished state a 2-6 player PVP combat game on a hexagonal grid where you use points limits to equip a fighter with weapons, skills and items to hedge your chances to win. There are 34 different characters over many fantasy races and 66 different items to pick from.

What inspired you to make a boardgame about the gladiatorial battles of Rome?

The original concept was fantasy-based pit fights/ back-alley brawls. But it just didn't feel grand enough or epic. The most grand and epic scale i could think off was gladiatorial combat just like the colosseums in Rome.

Are there any ideas you had that never made it into the game at this point?

Quite a few and how I have released Caladium is with the base game what's needed to play and wave 1 that expands on what you can do more characters etc. What i do plan however is with future waves expand on not just the character and item base but new mechanics and ways to play. Some of the ideas in the works outside new races are. Solo/ co-op modes where players fight a huge monster/ beast like golems, demons etc. Implementing magic and spells by having some characters with a intelligence & mana stat to equip spells like normal items and items to give existing fighters access. This along with new terrain types like water & pits and different shaped arenas.

What makes Caladium unique?

In my opinion no one rule is unique to Caladium but the stand out difference is i havent quite seen the blend of theme and certain rules in one package and the game was designed to have such a low barrier to entry to learn to play to a point where i have taught people who have only played the likes of monopoly etc. to play BUT the skill ceiling is incredibly high with combo and strategies. Couple that with the encouragement of table talk and many aspects intended to create chaos like a real fight Caladium isnt a game you can plan ahead for and strategies you need to react to what happens when your turn comes.

What previous games have you developed or been involved in?

None, this is actually my very first game I have had any hand in developing and im so happy and excited how it's been received so far words can’t explain it.

When does the Kickstarter campaign begin?

The current road map is in 4 simple steps at the moment.1 was to debut the game at the UKGE so people get the very first public look at the game, 2 is currently ongoing and near the end where I’m running ad tests to find the best combination of pictures/ text to run the main pre-launch campaign, 3 is run a month long campaign leading up to the Kickstarter campaign that is step 4.

Caladium is getting ready to go into crowdfunding and looks to be a great game in the making so I will be following Danny and his journey to launch his first game and we will be continuing to check in and update as the Caladium development progresses and hopefully bring you more content and insider looks as it goes into crowdfunding.
I hope you enjoyed the article and don’t forget to stay up to date with Danny and Caladium on the official website and as always please don’t forget to check out the Zatu store.
