Whilst at UKGE a few weeks ago I stumbled upon a game I’d seen some Facebook Ads for and had already gained an invested interest in. The game is Caladium, a gladiator battle game that scratches an itch for me as a gamer and a massive fan of Roman culture.
Although I didn’t get much time to check out the game I did manage to reach out to creator Danny to do a quick Q&A and talk about his creation.
Tell me a bit about Caladium.
Caladium was a created almost on a whim, the original thought was wondering if a game existed where the points to buy items was your carry capacity. I was at my weekly board game club and with borrowed things from different games (a Bloodbowl board, Flintloque minis and a notebook and pen) i started messing about with base ideas. It's something like the original idea as after trying things they never worked out but it was fun to play, and friends helped me get it to the point it is now. It's in its finished state a 2-6 player PVP combat game on a hexagonal grid where you use points limits to equip a fighter with weapons, skills and items to hedge your chances to win. There are 34 different characters over many fantasy races and 66 different items to pick from.
What inspired you to make a boardgame about the gladiatorial battles of Rome?
Are there any ideas you had that never made it into the game at this point?
What makes Caladium unique?
What previous games have you developed or been involved in?
When does the Kickstarter campaign begin?
The current road map is in 4 simple steps at the moment.1 was to debut the game at the UKGE so people get the very first public look at the game, 2 is currently ongoing and near the end where I’m running ad tests to find the best combination of pictures/ text to run the main pre-launch campaign, 3 is run a month long campaign leading up to the Kickstarter campaign that is step 4.
I hope you enjoyed the article and don’t forget to stay up to date with Danny and Caladium on the official website and as always please don’t forget to check out the Zatu store.
