Superclub: The Football Manager Board Game review

A person plays the "Superclub" football manager board game. The green board is filled with cards, dice, and colorful player pieces, conveying excitement.

Introduction

For football fans who have spent countless hours building dynasties in Football Manager, Superclub offers the chance to bring that experience to the tabletop. Originally released in 2020, the game challenges players to build a club from humble beginnings into a footballing powerhouse through clever squad building, financial management and a little bit of luck.

I think this will appeal to football purists who are keen on the idea of starting with a basic club and growing it into a dominant force through shrewd decision-making, both on and off the pitch. I have played this game in 2, 3 and 4-player environments and believe it works well at any player count. However, the more players involved, the more competitive and engaging the experience becomes. If you're into intense competition, just watch the mood shift when someone unsettles a superstar player at another club.

What is in the Box?

Box cover and components of "Superclub," a football management board game. Includes board, player cards, dice, and vibrant graphics of a stadium.

Let's start with the game boards. The main board is smartly designed and double-sided, giving players the choice between a traditional football-pitch green side or a more understated blue side. This board serves as the centrepiece of the game and hosts most of the action. Accompanying it is a smaller double-sided board used for specific game events. Both boards are well thought out, practical and visually appealing.

As with most board games, cards play a significant role. The majority represent players of varying quality, while separate colour-coded decks provide upgraded player options as the game progresses. There are also staff cards that offer advantages to your club, as well as "Game Changer" cards that can dramatically swing the outcome of a match in either direction. Arguably the most important deck is the Super Cup deck, as earning these cards ultimately gives you the opportunity to compete in the game's showpiece final.

The standout components are the club items. Each player receives a high-quality club mat used to organise and develop their squad throughout the game. Players can choose from four different club colours, each accompanied by matching dice and tokens. The club mats also visually represent the infrastructure of your club, helping players track improvements to key areas over the course of the game.

Football is one of the world's biggest industries, and Superclub embraces this by making finances a key part of the experience. Money is earned through strong performances and can be used to buy and sell players, pay wages, hire staff, and improve club infrastructure.

How it plays

So, lets set the scene, you are the manager of a new club, and your task is to get to 100 points quicker than your rival clubs whilst developing your squad and club infrastructure. If you are the most dominant over the course of the game, you will earn the right to take part in the super cup and play a one of game to write your team into folklore. The outcome will be down to your management and decisions until this point; will it be enough…

You initially begin with 16 players of varying qualities of which you can choose to make a part of the squad, sell them, or develop them into better players. During the end of the season ‘off season’ phase you will have an opportunity to obtain more talent if you so wish.

During the ‘off season’ you will also have to make choices on where your resources will be distributed and upgrade various parts of the club’s infrastructure which include the stadium, scouting departing, and training facilities.

During each season you will play five matches and outcomes will determine where you finish in the table, how much you will earn in revenue and which players in the squad you will be able to keep, teams in higher positions can unsettle players in teams beneath them so be wary.

What It Does Well

There are many positives to Superclub, but its biggest strength is accessibility. The game is straightforward enough for inexperienced players to learn relatively quickly, while still offering enough strategic depth to keep experienced players engaged. The various decisions players must make, combined with elements of luck, ensure that winning is never guaranteed.

One of Superclub's greatest strengths is its replay ability. No two squads ever feel the same, and the combination of player development, transfers and infrastructure decisions mean each club evolves in a unique way. This keeps every game feeling fresh and competitive, even after multiple playthroughs.

For football fans looking for a tabletop football management experience, Superclub gets a lot right. The core gameplay revolves around building and managing a football club, and the progression system captures many of the same feelings that make football management games so addictive.

While this review focuses on the base game, it is worth mentioning the available expansions. Additional content allows player counts to increase from four to six, creating an even more competitive transfer market. There are also "Powerhouse" clubs that increase the challenge of simulated matches, as well as club packs featuring real-life teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Porto. None of these are essential, but they offer interesting options for groups looking to expand the experience.

One comparison that inevitably comes up is Football Manager. While Superclub captures many of the same emotions as developing players, upgrading facilities, managing finances, and building a successful club, it understandably cannot match the depth of a video game simulation. Instead, it focuses on accessibility and player interaction, creating a faster and more social football management experience.

What impressed me most was how well the game accommodates non-football fans. The structured decision-making around squad building, finances and infrastructure means that even players with little football knowledge can build a competitive club and enjoy the experience. This makes it much easier to get friends and family involved, even if they would normally be put off by a football-themed game.

Weaknesses

As with any board game, Superclub is not without its flaws.

The biggest drawback for me is the amount of luck involved. Dice rolls play a significant role in determining match outcomes, and even a carefully constructed squad can be undone by an unfortunate roll at the wrong moment. For some players, this may feel
frustrating, particularly when compared to the strategic planning involved in building a team. However, randomness is a common feature of board games, and many players will enjoy the unpredictability it creates.

Another issue is that experienced groups may eventually find the gameplay loop repetitive. Once everyone understands the optimal approaches to squad building and infrastructure development, some of the surprise factor begins to fade. While replay ability remains strong thanks to the variety of players and club development options, this is something to consider for groups planning to play very frequently.

Final Verdict – Overall Score: 82/100

So, is Superclub worth adding to your collection?

I would absolutely recommend Superclub to board game enthusiasts who are also
football fans. There is a lot that the game gets right, and overall, it delivers an engaging
and surprisingly authentic football management experience on the tabletop.
The playing time is slightly longer than many traditional board games, but that is largely
due to the meaningful decisions players must make throughout each phase of the
game. The highs and lows of matchday, the intensity of the transfer market, the
satisfaction of improving your club's infrastructure and the excitement of ultimately
lifting the Super Cup all combine to create a compelling experience.

While it may not offer the tactical depth of Football Manager, Superclub successfully
captures the excitement of building a football club and competing against rivals. For
football fans looking for a board game that combines strategy, competition, and club
development, Superclub is an easy recommendation and a worthy addition to any
collection
