Hitster: Music Bingo review

Cover image of Hitster Music Bingo featuring neon writing and a disco ball.

Welcome to the world of Hitster, the ultra light and accessible music party game featuring tracks spanning 11 decades, which makes it suitable for a wide range of age groups playing together (think Xmas day, Gran’s birthday, etc…).

The aim is to get the tracks in the right order on your tableau by release year while earning bonus Hitster tokens for knowing both artist and track name, which you can use to swoop in and steal others’ cards if they misplace them in their own tableau.

It's got some quite interesting mechanics. It seems very simple at first but there are some interesting things you can do with the Hitster tokens that really increase the amount of fun and the complexity of play just by enough to keep things a bit more interesting than just “put these songs in order of date”.

As well as being able to use a token to shout “Hitster” when you feel like your opponent has put their card in the wrong place in their timeline and try and steal it by guessing correctly. The Hitster tokens can be used to get a fresh song if you don’t have a clue where yours goes and you can trade 3 unused ones at the end of the game for an extra card if you like to hoard them like my wife does for a late surge of points.

Hitster is my wife’s favorite game and one she could play every day. It’s also the first game I’ll show people who have never played board games before as it’s a very simple entry to the hobby.

We loved the game so much, we bought the expansions and also created our own custom 606 card expansion pack on top by getting some QR codes printed on sticky labels for the card backs. We now have over 1600 cards for it!

One downside is once you get through all of the cards, it may be quite possible to remember all the dates, it could have done with coming with twice as many cards as it comes with. It does come with 308, so as long as you aren’t playing every day, you should be fine.

I 100% recommend this to everyone as the best party game for dinner parties, casual gamers, quick warm up games to break the ice before something heavy and game situations that run a large range of ages like family gathering.

Why you might like this
+ Fun for all ages
+ Rules-light party game that doesn’t feel like forced silliness
+ Great table presence
+ Good interaction via the tokens

Why you might not like this
- You only like heavy games
- You don’t like music
