When board games take centre stage!

A photo taken of people at the board game event playing

What happens when you combine a board game, live theatre and a room full of people who all want a bit of power? You get When the World is Your Enemy, an ambitious interactive production coming to Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District this autumn!

Created by musician and theatre director Jing Wong, the show turns its audience into the players. Rather than sitting quietly and watching a story unfold, participants make decisions that help shape what happens next. The result is part theatre, part board game, and part live-action role-playing experience. Following a successful first run earlier this year, the larger Epic Edition will take over The Box at WestK in September and October.

Gods and humans

Players can take on one of two roles: a powerful god or a human attempting to build a civilisation. Human players must work together, forming alliances, trading resources and making strategic decisions as their societies grow. Of course, where there are alliances, there is always the possibility of betrayal! The gods have a rather different job. Sitting separately from the human players, they can influence the game by granting or removing resources and even affecting players’ scores. The production is split into three acts, with each one building towards a world war. Points are awarded based on the results, while the gods have the power to interfere with the outcome.

It sounds like a recipe for some seriously unpredictable evenings!

Game meets theatre

Wong’s love of games is at the heart of the project. He became heavily involved with board games during the COVID-19 pandemic and later explored interactive storytelling and game theatre as part of his PhD research at City University of Hong Kong. He is also a Dungeon Master and has experience with live-action role-playing, including taking part in the huge ConQuest of Mythodea event in Germany. Those influences are easy to spot. The performers are less traditional actors and more facilitators who help guide players through the experience. Instead of following a fixed script, they react to what the audience does.

No rulebook nightmare!

If the thought of learning a complicated new game before stepping onto a theatre stage sounds terrifying, there is good news! The production has been designed so players can learn the mechanics naturally as the story develops. That means experienced board gamers can get stuck into the strategy, while newcomers can enjoy the experience without needing to study a rulebook the size of a small novel. The show also combines its gameplay with live music. Four original songs will be performed by a live band, helping bring everyone together as the fictional world descends into conflict.

Your choices matter

At its heart, When the World is Your Enemy is interested in power, rules, and freedom. It asks what people do when they are given influence over others, and whether the rules of a game are really that different from the rules we follow in everyday life. There will be seven Cantonese performances, alongside a special English-language show on October 2. For board game fans, it is a fascinating twist on the traditional tabletop experience. Instead of rolling dice around a table, you are thrown directly into the story!

And with an entire audience making decisions together, there is only one guarantee: nobody knows exactly how the final chapter will play out.
