It took barely any time at all for The Wheel of Time’s first official board game to smash through its Kickstarter goal - and the numbers are still climbing fast.
After years of mixed luck with on-screen adaptations, Robert Jordan’s fantasy universe is now heading to the tabletop in a much bigger way, with War of the Dragon already pulling in huge support from fans within hours of launch.
Fast Funding
The Kickstarter campaign for War of the Dragon launched with a funding target of $50,000. It didn’t stay there for long.
At the time of writing, the campaign has already surged past the $300,000 mark, making it one of the more attention-grabbing tabletop launches of the week.
That kind of momentum probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise though. The Wheel of Time remains one of fantasy’s biggest literary franchises, even if adaptations outside the books haven’t always had the smoothest ride.
The recent cancellation of Amazon’s live-action series still feels pretty fresh for a lot of fans, especially after many viewers considered its third season the strongest one yet.
Tabletop Debut
Interestingly, this is actually the first proper board game adaptation for The Wheel of Time.
The series did receive a tabletop RPG from Wizards of the Coast back in 2001, but it never really became a long-term staple in the hobby scene. War of the Dragon is taking a much more modern approach, combining strategy gameplay with miniatures, area control, tableau building, and multiple play modes.
The game supports 2–4 players and centres around large-scale conflict and survival within Jordan’s fantasy setting.
From the early previews, it definitely looks like the campaign is leaning heavily into presentation too, with detailed artwork and miniatures already becoming a big selling point for backers.
Trusted Studio
A huge part of the excitement also comes from the publisher behind the project.
War of the Dragon is being developed by Dire Wolf, the studio responsible for games like Dune: Imperium and Clank!, both of which have built strong reputations in modern tabletop gaming circles.
That connection alone seems to be giving fans a fair amount of confidence in the adaptation. Dune: Imperium in particular has become one of the standout strategy board games of the last few years, so there’s already a sense that Dire Wolf knows how to handle large fantasy and sci-fi properties without stripping away what makes them interesting.
For a franchise as sprawling as The Wheel of Time, that probably matters quite a bit.
Bigger Revival
The timing of all this is pretty interesting too.
Even with the live-action show ending, The Wheel of Time doesn’t appear to be disappearing anytime soon. Alongside the board game, both a new animated series and a video game adaptation are currently in development as well.
There still aren’t many details attached to either project yet, but it does suggest the franchise is quietly moving into a new phase rather than fading away completely.
And honestly, tabletop gaming feels like a fairly natural fit for the series. Between the political factions, large-scale battles, and huge cast of characters, there’s plenty of material to build around.
Campaign Window
The War of the Dragon Kickstarter campaign is set to run until June 23, 2026, with an estimated release window currently listed for June 2027.
For fantasy fans who’ve been waiting to revisit The Wheel of Time in a new format, this might end up being one of the more interesting adaptations the franchise has seen in years.
