Remember spending way too much time guiding a tiny pixel snake around a Nokia phone? Well, Snake is escaping the monochrome screen and landing on the tabletop! The classic mobile game is being transformed into a competitive board game, with pre-orders now open ahead of its planned release in September 2026. The new game brings the familiar idea of collecting goodies and avoiding crashes into a tabletop format for 2 to 4 players.
From phone to tabletop!
Snake might look simple, but the original game became one of the most recognisable mobile games ever made. While versions of the Snake concept date back to the 1970s, Nokia helped turn it into a global phenomenon when the game appeared on phones such as the Nokia 6110. The basic idea was wonderfully straightforward: control your growing snake, collect objects, and avoid smashing into walls or your own increasingly enormous tail. The board game keeps that core idea but adds dice, route planning, and plenty of opportunities to get in your opponents' way!
Roll, move, collect!
Each game lasts around 30 minutes, making it a fairly quick option for a game night or a few rounds after dinner. Players navigate across double-sided boards while hunting for apples, stars, diamonds, and other bonuses. Collecting these goodies isn't just about padding your score either. Your rewards can be spent on useful abilities, including extra manoeuvres, bursts of speed and jumps that let your snake leap over obstacles. The result looks set to combine the familiar pick-up-and-grow gameplay of Snake with a bit more tactical decision-making. You’ll need to think about where you're heading while keeping an eye on what everyone else is doing. Because nobody wants to be the snake that gets boxed in!
Watch your tail!
The game comes with three double-sided boards, erasable markers, card decks and a collection of custom dice. The different boards should give players plenty of ways to mix things up across multiple games. Scoring takes place at the end of a round or when a player suffers an unfortunate collision. Whoever has collected the most points takes the win. If players finish the level, the tiebreaker gets suitably Snake-like. The player with the longest surviving snake claims victory!
Coming this September!
The board game is currently available to pre-order, with stock expected to arrive towards the end of September 2026. Snake is a brilliant example of how a tiny slice of gaming nostalgia can be given a completely new life. You might not be squeezing the entire game onto a tiny Nokia screen anymore, but the objective remains familiar: collect the good stuff, grow your snake and, most importantly, don't crash! Just try not to throw the dice at anyone when they steal your perfect route. That wasn't covered in the original Nokia manual!
