Cowboy Bebop meets RPG
A brand-new tabletop RPG campaign setting is making huge waves online, with Neon Odyssey smashing through crowdfunding expectations in spectacular fashion. Created by Legends of Avantris, the sci-fi themed project has surged to more than 8,500% funded on Kickstarter, pulling in millions of dollars with plenty of time still left in the campaign.
The project blends space opera storytelling, retro anime influences, and old-school gaming nostalgia into a colourful new setting built for Dungeons & Dragons 5E. Drawing inspiration from series like Cowboy Bebop alongside classic SNES-era video games, Neon Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about third-party tabletop releases in recent years.
More than just a reskin
While plenty of fan-made settings simply swap fantasy swords for laser guns, Neon Odyssey looks to be taking things much further. The campaign expands heavily on standard 5E mechanics with brand-new systems and content designed specifically for its retro-futuristic universe.
The project is spread across three books, including a core rulebook, a setting guide packed with lore and creatures, and an expansion focused on professions and extra missions. Players can expect over 20 subclasses, new playable species, vehicle mechanics, starship combat, monsters, and a huge collection of sci-fi themed adventures.
One of the biggest talking points so far has been the vehicle system. Early previews suggest the rules are far more detailed than many fans expected, especially compared to previous official space-focused D&D releases. Spacecraft battles and high-speed racing both appear to play a major role in the experience, leaning heavily into the arcade-inspired energy of classic sci-fi anime and video games.
A huge hit
Part of Neon Odyssey’s popularity seems to come from how confidently it embraces its influences. The setting is packed with references and ideas inspired by ‘80s and ‘90s pop culture, from space western anime to retro racing games and Saturday morning cartoons.
Fans have already spotted similarities to franchises like Star Fox and F-Zero, while the overall visual style leans heavily into neon lighting, synthwave aesthetics, and chunky retro-futuristic technology.
The project’s animated trailer has also played a huge role in generating excitement. Featuring flashy animation, emotional storytelling, and music from synthwave band The Midnight, the reveal video taps directly into the kind of nostalgic energy that fans of retro sci-fi love.
Rather than focusing purely on action, the campaign also appears to emphasise themes of friendship, redemption, and found family, giving the setting a more heartfelt side beneath all the glowing neon and starship battles.
Following the success of Crooked Moon
This is not the first major success story for Legends of Avantris. The team previously released Crooked Moon, a folk horror-inspired setting that earned praise from many tabletop fans for its atmosphere, worldbuilding, and extensive gameplay options.
That earlier success has likely helped build confidence around Neon Odyssey, especially since playtest materials are already available for backers to explore. Early impressions suggest the project is much more than a stylish concept, with many players praising the depth of its mechanics and the amount of content already shown off during development.
Classic fantasy classes have also reportedly been adapted thoughtfully to fit the sci-fi setting, helping preserve familiar D&D gameplay while still making the world feel unique.
A long wait
Despite the massive success of the campaign, players may need a little patience before they can fully dive into the universe. Current plans place delivery around November 2027, meaning there is still a long journey ahead before physical books begin arriving.
Still, judging by the overwhelming response so far, plenty of tabletop fans seem more than happy to wait.
Between its retro anime influences, deep customisation, and love for old-school gaming culture, Neon Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the biggest tabletop RPG success stories of the decade.
