It already feels impossible to walk through a tabletop convention without seeing The Lord of the Rings somewhere. But things may be about to escalate even further.
A growing number of publishers are now developing officially licensed Middle-earth tabletop products, following a major new partnership deal managed by Asmodee.
And while only a handful of projects have been revealed so far, the companies involved suggest this could be the beginning of a much larger push into the hobby space.
Several Publishers Have Already Signed On
Asmodee recently announced its first wave of partner publishers working on tabletop games and accessories based on Middle-earth Enterprises properties, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The initial line-up includes Sirius Dice, Stone Blade Entertainment, Game Toppers, Grand Gamers Guild, and Play To Z.
Some of those projects are already starting to emerge.
One Game Is Already Heading To Crowdfunding
Stone Blade Entertainment recently confirmed plans for The Lord of the Rings: Ascension, a licensed version of its long-running Ascension deckbuilding game.
The project is expected to launch on Gamefound in the coming weeks, bringing Middle-earth characters and themes into one of tabletop gaming’s best-known deckbuilding systems.
Meanwhile, Game Toppers revealed plans for an entire line of Lord of the Rings themed gaming tables, mats, and accessories - meaning the franchise is moving beyond games themselves and further into premium hobby products.
Not Every Project Has Been Revealed Yet
Interestingly, some publishers involved in the announcement still haven’t revealed exactly what they’re making.
Neither Grand Gamers Guild nor Play To Z have officially announced their Middle-earth projects yet, leaving plenty of room for speculation about what could still be coming.
Given the scale of the licence, it would hardly be surprising to see everything from cooperative adventure games to collector accessories eventually appear under the partnership.
This Is Bigger Than A Single Game Launch
The new arrangement stems from a category management deal announced last year, which effectively places Asmodee in charge of managing Middle-earth tabletop licensing partnerships.
Rather than developing every product internally, the company now works with external publishers to expand the franchise across different corners of the hobby industry.
That strategy potentially opens the door to a huge range of future releases, especially as tabletop gaming continues to overlap with major entertainment brands.
And few fantasy properties are larger than The Lord of the Rings.
Existing Licences Aren’t Going Anywhere
Importantly, previously established Middle-earth partnerships will continue unaffected.
That includes Wizards of the Coast and its upcoming The Hobbit Universes Beyond set for Magic: The Gathering, alongside ongoing projects from Free League Publishing and Q Workshop.
So rather than replacing existing tabletop adaptations, this new initiative appears designed to massively expand them.
Middle-earth Keeps Expanding
At this point, Middle-earth has already become one of the biggest settings in tabletop gaming, spanning miniature wargames, RPGs, card games, dice collections, and board games.
But with multiple new publishers now entering the picture simultaneously, it looks like the franchise’s presence is only going to grow from here.
And there’s a good chance this is just the first wave.
