Dinosaur board games are nothing new, but Jurassic Crisis is taking the prehistoric survival formula in a rather strange direction. The upcoming survival board game has already raised more than $200,000 through crowdfunding, and its combination of dinosaurs, player-versus-player action, and supernatural mysteries has certainly caught our attention! Created by designer Andrej W. Sperling, Jurassic Crisis drops players onto a prehistoric island where things are very much not as they should be.
You're already dead!
The game's story starts with a pretty unusual premise. Your characters have already died, only to wake up on a mysterious prehistoric island. Even stranger, their blood is glowing blue! Rather than worrying about how they ended up there, players have a much more pressing problem. They need to explore the island, gather resources, craft equipment and search for three artefacts connected to mysterious obelisks. The ultimate goal is to collect the artefacts and become the first player to activate an obelisk. Simple enough, right? Not when the island is packed with enormous dinosaurs and the other players are trying to beat you to it!
Survive the Island!
Jurassic Crisis mixes PvE and PvP, meaning the biggest threat isn't always sitting across the table from you. Players will need to deal with the island's prehistoric inhabitants while also keeping an eye on their opponents. Resources need to be gathered, equipment crafted and plans made carefully if you're going to survive long enough to reach the obelisks. And then there are the dinosaurs themselves. The campaign teases the ability to ride dinosaurs and potentially harness their power, adding another layer to the survival experience. Instead of simply treating the prehistoric creatures as obstacles, Jurassic Crisis appears to be making them an important part of the world and its gameplay.
A big Campaign!
The crowdfunding campaign has already brought in more than €183,000, equivalent to over $200,000, showing there's clearly an appetite for this particular prehistoric nightmare. There are several pledge options available, starting with the Core Game at €99. This version supports solo and two-player games, while anyone wanting to play with three or four players will need the €143 Gameplay Bundle, which adds the Redwood Survivors expansion and 4 Player Expansion. For collectors, there's also a hefty €229 Ultimate Collector's All-In Edition, featuring the core game, both expansions and extra accessories including a dice tower.
Ready for the Crisis?
Jurassic Crisis is shaping up to be a fascinating mix of survival, exploration and prehistoric chaos. Throw in mysterious obelisks, glowing blood and the ability to ride dinosaurs, and you've got a board game that clearly isn't interested in doing the ordinary dinosaur thing!
The crowdfunding campaign is currently live, with several pledge options available for players who want to get involved.
