Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game heads to Kickstarter!
Cult of the Lamb has already stolen countless hours from players around the world. Between dungeon crawling, looking after a flock of demanding Followers and trying to keep an entire cult from falling apart, it has become one of the most unique indie games in recent years. Now it's making the jump to the tabletop!
Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game has officially launched on Kickstarter, bringing together dungeon exploration, cult management, and strategic decision-making in a competitive board game for one to four players. Created by Paper Fort Games alongside Massive Monster and Devolver Digital, this adaptation looks like it's aiming to recreate everything fans love about the video game. Judging by what's been revealed so far, it's doing a pretty convincing job!
Two games in one!
One of the biggest reasons Cult of the Lamb stands out is how it constantly swaps between action and management. One minute, you're battling monsters through dangerous Crusades. The next time you're back at camp, feed followers, collect resources, and put out whatever disaster happened while you were away. Thankfully, the board game sticks closely to that formula.
Every game takes place across four rounds, with each one split into two distinct phases. First comes the Crusade, then it's time to head back home and run your cult. It's a simple structure, but one that perfectly captures the flow of the original game.
Venture into the wild!
During the Crusade Phase, players guide their Prophets through branching dungeon paths packed with enemies, bosses, events, treasure, and plenty of surprises. Choosing where to go isn't always easy. Some paths promise better rewards, while others might leave you taking on tougher enemies than you'd hoped for. Knowing when to keep pushing and when to retreat could make all the difference. Combat also avoids relying purely on luck.
Instead of simply rolling dice and hoping for the best, players assign their weapon dice to different attacks and abilities. That means every battle comes with meaningful decisions, especially when powerful Curses and Tarot Cards enter the mix. It sounds like a much more tactical approach than straightforward dice chucking, which should keep every encounter feeling engaging.
Time to build your cult!
Once everyone's Crusade comes to an end, it's time to return home. The Cult Phase focuses on everything happening back at your settlement. Players recruit Followers, gather resources, build structures, keep Faith high, and unlock new Doctrines that shape how their cult grows.
This section uses worker placement mechanics, with Followers and Prophets being assigned to different action spaces around the board. Of course, if another player grabs the action you needed first, you'll have to rethink your plans! That competitive element should make every round feel lively, with players constantly adapting as the board changes.
Grow stronger every round!
As your cult expands, so do your options. Weapons can be upgraded, Followers become more useful, and new buildings unlock even stronger abilities. Little by little, you'll build an efficient engine that generates resources, boosts Faith, and helps your cult stay ahead of the competition. Well... assuming your Followers don't start questioning your leadership first!
Paper Fort Games has also hinted that sacrificing rival Followers could be part of the experience, adding another layer of chaotic fun for groups that enjoy a bit of friendly betrayal.
Take on the bishops!
No Cult of the Lamb adventure would be complete without facing the Bishops of the Old Faith. As players progress through the game, they'll encounter tougher enemies before eventually reaching the final challenge. After the fourth round, everyone must decide whether they're confident enough to confront The One Who Waits or rely on the Victory Points they've already earned.
The showdown can even change depending on which Bishop appears, giving games a little more replay value and helping each session feel different.
A great fit for the table!
Some video games never quite translate into board games. Cult of the Lamb feels like the complete opposite. Its mix of exploration, resource management, upgrading, and balancing priorities already feels perfectly suited to tabletop play. Rather than simply borrowing the artwork and characters, this adaptation looks like it's trying to recreate the decisions players make throughout the video game. Head out on dangerous expeditions. Return with valuable resources. Keep your Followers happy. Repeat!
That familiar gameplay loop is exactly what fans will want to see.
Worth watching?
There's still plenty left to discover throughout the Kickstarter campaign, including stretch goals, pledge tiers, and any extra content that could be revealed before it finishes. Even so, the early signs are incredibly promising.
Cult of the Lamb: The Board Game appears to capture the charm, strategy, and wonderfully chaotic energy that made the video game such a hit in the first place. If you've ever wanted to build a thriving cult, battle terrifying monsters, and somehow keep everyone fed at the same time, this might be one Kickstarter worth keeping an eye on.
Just don't be surprised if your Followers start questioning your decisions before the game's over!
