Designed by Ben Pinchback and Matt Riddle, this is a charming set collection card game about garden songbirds and queuing. The artwork by Klemens Franz and Mike Langman is classically beautiful, with the illustrations looking like they've flown straight out of a 'Know Your Garden Birds' book from the 1970's.

In Piepmatz - Little Songbirds, two to four players aim to acquire songbirds - and seeds - that have congregated around a garden bird feeder. Points are calculated at the end of the game once the deck has run out. Only players with the majority of a bird species will score that family of bird - each card has eggs on it, which are worth points. Managing to collect a male and female pair of the same bird type scores you points though, as do any seed cards (all of which also have eggs on them).

Each bird has a numerical value from 1-6 - there's definitely a pecking order in Piepmatz! Set-up sees randomly drawn birds sitting either side of the bird feeder, and above it four seed cards in a vertical row. On their turn, players place a card from their hand into a queue behind a bird of their choice. If the number of the bird's (or birds') value(s) in the queue totals more than the single bird's value at the feeder, that player will collect the bird at the feeder to sit face-up in front of them.

Also, the difference in value between those two (or more) birds is the seed card that they acquire. So if you play a six-value bird behind a four-value bird, you'll claim the four-value bird at the feeder; the difference is +2, so you'll claim the second seed card in that vertical column.

Now the remaining bird with the highest value flies to the front of the queue. If the total value(s) of the remaining birds behind it is larger than its own, you repeat the process above, possibly gaining that bird for your collection too, as well as another seed card. Chain-reaction moves can and will occur and they can be so satisfying, especially when you've got your eye on collecting, say, a male and female Yellowhammer within the same queue!

However, like in every garden, there are some risks... In the seed deck, there are also some mean crows and pesky squirrels! When drawn, these sit 'attached' to seed cards and are obligatory when player players earn that seed card. These are both negative cards that result in the player losing either seed cards (which are guaranteed points) or losing a bird from their largest set of birds (potential points).

With its wonderful thinky options and delightful artwork for you to muse over, Piepmatz is a clever card game that will leave you wanting to reach for a pair of binoculars to observe the avian activity in your own garden...

Player Count: 2-4
Time: 20-40 Minutes
Age: 12+

Patchwork Express features the same basic gameplay as Patchwork, however it's faster and has more colourful and less complex pieces. In Agricola, 1-4 players compete as rival medieval farmers. You each start off with humble beginnings: a small house and a patch of empty land. It's a worker placement game where you'll look to grow vegetables to feed your family. You'll look to gain resources to expand your farmhouse. And you'll look to fence off pastures so you can practise animal husbandry and get some cows and sheep!Farmers of the Moor, then, adds further depth, strategy and options into the mix. The same core gameplay remains. You visit resource accumulation spots, and new locations get added each passing round. But there's changes, too. To begin with, your farm's covered with forest and moor tiles. You'll need to clear these before you start farming! But don't worry, you can cut the peat you find in the moor, so it's not all bad. You'll need that peat though - because now you have to heat your farm, or your family fall sick! Heating costs fall if you renovate your house, which could drive your early-game strategy...In this expansion there's more animeeples, too! (Animals + meeples = animeeples!) Horses get their debut in Farmers of the Moor, and they provide big points if you can breed them. Also, there's an extra 14 new Major Improvements, and a whopping 117 Minor Improvements. These cards will have a big impact on how you plan your approach. At the same time, they provide a barn-load more replay-ability.This is the revised version of Farmers of the Moor, by publisher Lookout Spiele. Not feeding that resulted in heavy penalties. Caverna softened the system a bit but kept it in the game. All Creatures Big and Small does away with it completely. While this may put some off the reason is quite clear. This is a streamlined shorter game of rearing animals and fencing them in efficiently, to have to worry about feeding on top of this would be a touch to much.

Each player starts with three workers, which they will place on certain sections of the board to take the action associated with that section. Usually, this is collecting resources which can then be used to upgrade your farm with buildings, fences, stalls and the like. These are all important but the real key to big scores are animals. For a start you score negative points unless you get three of each of the four animal types. But animals won't stay in an open field - why would they? So using your gathered resources you will place out buildings and fences to contain them.

Many buildings can hold animals, but there are strict rules regarding how many animals can stay in an area but this can be increased by various means. In the big box there are so many buildings included due to the expansions, so the variety is incredible. I believe the vanilla All Creatures Big and Small was criticised until the expansions arrived, so it's great to have them in one box.

ASBO

All Creatures Big and Small is a worker placement game but also a risk and reward race of sorts. A number of the resource and animal sections of the board continue to have resources added to them each round. This means that if no one visits a space with three wood in the first round, another three will be added on the next round and so on. So, how tempting does the pile have to get before one of you takes it? Or should you take it early to be safe? I love these kind of decisions in games and it works even better in a two-player game as there's more chance something will be left for you if you wait.

When you take the action to get more fences you also get a farm extension of three more fields. Extensions are great ways of scoring more points as if you fill one you earn four points. Might not seem like much but in All Creatures Big and Small it can be HUGE!

The variety in the game is excellent! There are tons of buildings and in the base and advanced variant you only use eight, you can add to this for an even more advanced game, but the rule and I recommend waiting until you get the flow of the game until you add more buildings. Buildings are essentially powers, often adding points, animal storage or some other useful function to your farm, thankfully there is a handy appendix in the rules so you can check what they do.

My biggest complaint is a printing error using the older icons on one of the starting buildings. This is unfortunate as this tile is used every game, and while not a huge deal it is aesthetically disappointing. Some people point out the the wooden cows and horses are very similar in colour and in anything less than piercing white light it can be difficult to tell them apart. For me this hasn't really been an issue but I can see how they could be confused.

All Creatures Big and Small

At this point I have played All Creatures Big and Small more than I have played Agricola, not because it is a better game but because it is drastically shorter and more straight forward. Here, up to four players compete to see who can create the best zoo, which is dedicated to housing different subspecies of bear. Barenpark is a gratifying tile-drafting/tile-laying, set collection game by Lookout Spiele. Players start with a single 4x4 grid, the entrance to their park, all of which have different layouts. There are various icons on some of the squares, ranging from 'level one' wheelbarrows, 'level two' cement mixers, 'level three' diggers, as well as construction workers and barricaded pits. On your turn you place a polyomino tile into your park adjacent to a previously placed tile, taking note of which icons you have covered up. For every icon covered, you get to take a bear enclosure tile of corresponding victory points value (as well as varying size and shape). Some larger tiles are unique in shape, while others decrease in value, so there is a first-come-first-served nature at play. However, the puzzle is that you cannot place any tiles in a way that covers up a pit. Instead, once the other 15 squares have been filled, this pit gains a golden bear statue, worth precious victory points. You need to get in early though, because they decrease in value, the later you complete them. The 'level one' wheelbarrow tiles earn you small tiles, such as a 1x1 public restroom, a 2x1 kids' play park, a 3x1 pathway or an L-shaped river. Neither of these are worth any points, but wow, do they help you out when you're left with an awkward, specific-shaped hole to fill! Covered up the construction workers? That means you can extend your park by adding a second 4x4 grid section adjacent to your bear park. The player to first successfully fill up four sections will trigger the end of the game - but the winner will be the person that has scored the most points. Barenpark has quite the racing element to it. There are also mini quests worth points upon completion to the first player to achieve them, such as placing, say, a certain number of polar bear enclosures within your park. There are a lot of lovely things going on in Barenpark. The artwork by Klemens Franz (of , , and fame, among many others) is cheerful and pleasant; it's really quite simple to teach; and it has the bonus of having that added factor of the game ends with you marvelling at the individual zoo you've created, sitting there in front of you. Barenpark has the kind of "Look at the pretty thing I've made!" factor, where you're half-reluctant to take it apart afterwards, and put it back in box. When you consider the other hugely popular, family-friendly games that Phil Walker- Harding has designed - the likes of , Cacao, , and more recently, - it's no wonder that Barenpark is such a roaring success. Or in this case first play? Because after my first play of Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King I was hooked. The attraction of the game of was, and still is, it's simplicity combined with the depth of choices on offer. Isle of Skye is a tile-laying game with auctioning to obtain the tiles you will be using to build your tableau. Placement rules are incredibly simple, you just have to match the terrain type, roads can lead to dead ends, but terrain must match. Speaking of terrain, there are only three types, grass, water and mountains. Each tile will display some of these in various configurations but also may have buildings, animals or other decorations that have point scoring potential. Each round you will draw three tiles from a bag and place them in front of your player screen. Behind your screen you will assign two of the tiles a value from your own money, and mark one to be discarded. The key thing here is setting the price, as during the next phase you and the other players will choose whether or not to buy tiles from each other at the price set. The good news is that if another player does buy one of your tiles you get the money, the bad news is you may end up without tiles to place in your own tableau. This creates an great game of cat and mouse as you play out various strategies, do you tempt players with low costing tiles you don't want? Potentially giving them scoring opportunities or set your prices high on the tiles you want? At the start of the game you will have randomly drawn four scoring tiles from a good selection, scoring happens at the end of each round but not every tile scores every round, meaning you have to play for immediate and longer term goals and at some point scoring tile A will not score again this game. You'll need to use some smart hand management and some top bluffing skills to earn the most gold in this game!At the start of each round, players receive a secret role. Either you'll be an honest gold-digger dwarf, who's hunting for ingots, or you'll be a saboteur. The latter of whom are trying their hardest to cripple proceedings. Two 'rock' cards and one 'gold' card get placed face-down, in a vertical line. A tunnel 'entrance' card sits face-up, the width of seven cards away across the table. The gold-diggers win if they can dig a meandering route linking the entrance to the correct 'gold' card. They need to achieve this before the deck runs out. The saboteurs win if they can prevent this from happening. The role cards are always weighted in favour of there being more gold-diggers than saboteurs. But how can you trust everyone?Players also receive a hand of cards. You'll need the base game of Catan to play this expansion. Inside you'll find five scenarios and three missions. You can combine these, or mix and match them up. Explorers & Pirates takes the base game of Catan in a new, different direction... literally! The core mechanisms remain from the base game - you still roll two dice for resources. But there's a lot of changes. The island's a different shape, for starters. And, there's no cities in Explorers & Pirates. Instead, you can build port settlements on the edge of Catan. From here you can build ships that sail off into the mysterious waters! Who's going to navigate the ship? Sailors! That's right, you can 'build' sailors and new settlers to explore the open ocean. The rulebook explains a bunch of different scenarios, all with suggested starting layouts. New hex tiles (both water and land) come in this expansion. You place them out in a fashion where you'll sail off to settle new islands. The land begins the game face-down (undiscovered). Once you sail to it, the tile flips, where it'll be one of the terrain hexes. Transported a settler here? It becomes a settlement on this new island! Some of the hexes could be pirate lairs. Instead to settlers, you could transport sailors, who fight these pirates. Many sailors overwhelm the pirate lair, and then that hex becomes a safe location. It generates gold for adjacent settlements. Talking of gold: if you roll dice and get nothing, you get one gold instead. You can trade in two gold for any resource - hooray!Conquer pirate lairs you could earn yourself Pirate Scourge token, which is worth 1VP. The game is still a race to earn the most points. You can establish this end-game threshold depending on which scenarios you play. There's also a Fish For Catan module, and a Spices For Catan one, too. These are pick-up-and-deliver mechanisms. Who will deliver the most resources back to Catan's guildhouse? You can introduce these modules one at a time, or hurl them all together. In Agricola, 2-4 players compete to build and run the best farm. (It also provides a solo mode.) It's a medium-weight Euro-style game, with the aim being to score the most victory points over 14 rounds. First-come, first-served worker placement lies at the heart of Agricola. You start with two farmer workers who can visit various locations. At the start of each round, some of these spots gain extra resources, making them more appealing. If no one visits them, these piles of wood, crops, or animals accumulate. They soon become all the more appealing! You might start the round with a certain plan... but how can you turn down that many free sheep? Each player has their own farm player mat. It's a grid of squares, and you need to try and fill it. Will you plough fields to grow veggies? Will you extend your farmhouse - and with it, your family of farmers? Will you build fences to keep livestock? There's a million-and-one different strategies in Agricola! There's quite a few plates to spin, as it were. Your options grow as the game progresses. Your animals also breed - but only if you have space to accommodate them. Many categories get scored at the end, and if you ignore them you can score dreaded minus points... Everybody with a settlement adjacent to the hex of that number gets the corresponding resource card (wood from the forest, wool from the sheep pasture, and so on). So, in theory, that ore mine on the eight is going to dish out resources far more often than the wheat field on 12 (a double-six is required, after all). At least, in theory... Dice, as you know, can be cruel! Then, the active player can vocally attempt to negotiate resource trades with the other players, to achieve their goals. This is the real heart and soul of Catan, and where the much-uttered phrase, "Wood for sheep?" will be heard at some point... There are also constant back-and-forth battles for claiming the reward of Longest Road or Largest Army. There's a deck of Development Cards to acquire, which offer you additional benefits. There's a barren desert, and in it, a robber who steals resources. Meanwhile, everyone aims to be the first to hit 10 points for having accomplished certain criteria (each city built is worth two points, for example). For your first game of Catan, the rulebook suggests a set layout of the hex tiles and numbers. However, the set-up is of course modular, meaning you could lay out the island in any way you desire, thus creating a unique game and strategy required, each time. No board game collection is complete without a copy of Catan! If you can't get enough of this classic Euro game then you should absolutely check out the many expansions available, such as Catan: Seafarers, and Explorer & Pirates (both of which involve many scenarios about sailing, discovering archipelagos and extra resources), Cities & Knights (barbarians are invading Catan and you must try to stop them!) and even a Game of Thrones Catan: Brotherhood of the Watch variant, which is themed around George R. R. Martin's hugely popular A Song of Ice and Fire series. The Settlers of Catan came out in 1995, and Seafarers followed in 1997. In 2015 the series got a rebrand to ‘Catan’.

As you might expect, Seafarers introduces a new concept to the original game – the sea! A lot of scenarios and additions come in this expansion. It’s an ideal next step if you can’t get enough of the island of Catan. You can combine Seafarers with other Catan expansions for an even bigger game. Take note though, that the Seafarers expansion requires the base game of Catan to play.

Of course, Seafarers comes with a whole bunch of extra hex tiles. They’re double-sided, so you can expand the ocean around the island of Catan. On their reverse lies the familiar terrains that provide the resources. The rulebook comes with a bunch of suggested scenarios. If you follow the layouts you could play with an archipelago set-up, a river, or small islands off the main coastline. Some set-ups have new offshore islands with their terrains face-down. They only get revealed once you land there – who knows what land you’ll discover?

Offshore islands, you ask? That’s right, you’re going to need ships to sail to them! These cost wool and wood, which gives the sheep pastures a far greater worth than the base game. You place ships on tiles like roads (and they count towards Longest Road, too). If your network reaches an island, you can settle there. In some scenarios, settling on the unclaimed islands are worth extra points. There’s also a ‘wild’ terrain, which lets you pick any resource of your choice if its number gets rolled.

Catan: Seafarers takes the base game of Catan and ratchets it up a notch or two. It retains all of the mechanisms from the original - featuring hand management, bluffing, network-building and secret roles. Here though comes a variety of new roles and additional action cards that spice up the gameplay and requires players to be even more devious in proving or hiding which team they're playing for... In regular Saboteur, players are dwarves in a mine, searching for an elusive golden nugget. Three cards - two with rock, one with gold - are shuffled and placed face-down seven spaces away from the start card, the entrance to the mine. Everyone is dealt a secret role showing which team they're part of - either an honest gold-digger, or a saboteur. The gold-diggers win if they can dig a continuous tunnel to discover and reach the gold card. They'll attempt to do this by playing tunnel cards that align from the start card to the card they suspect is the gold one. The saboteurs win if they can stop this occurring by hindering events - playing rockfalls, damaging equipment, or playing tunnel cards that meander away from the target. The trick is that no one knows who is on which team, so you'll have to try and be subtle in your moves, or opponents could work you out and then gang up on you, gaining the upper hand! Saboteur 2 introduces extra roles for players, providing a wider scope of gameplay and social deduction. There's a green team and a blue team of gold-diggers, who both want the gold, but it's a straight-up race to get there first. There's a Boss, who wears both green and blue, but earns less gold regardless of which gold-digging team win. There's a Geologist, who doesn't care for the gold card, but is more interested in laying mineral cards in the tunnel. There are also cards that can trap players (and an 'unlock' card, similar to the red break/green fix cards in the original). Some tunnel cards have green or blue doors on them that only the corresponding team can pass through. Some have ladders that allow a teleport action, of sorts (to bypass rockfalls). If you don't trust anyone at the table, you can also play cards that allow you to look at another player's identity. Another card lets you swap your entire hand of six cards with another player. The most extreme is that one card allows you to force a player to swap their identity with one of the unused ones not dealt out this round! Saboteur 2 is the ideal 'next-level' for fans of Saboteur. The marvellous thing about it is that all roles are shuffled and dealt out, so there's the possibility that no saboteurs could feature in a round! However, the team vs team mechanism means there is a completely different strategy for players to plump for. Chances are you're here because you love Catan. It might be over 25 years old, but it's still going strong! These Helpers of Catan provide an extra direction to proceedings. This mini-expansion is also compatible with Catan: Seafarers. Likewise, Catan Scenarios: Helpers of Catan also works with the Catan: 5-6 Player Extension, and Catan: Seafarers - 5-6 Player Extension. These Helpers take the form of 10 cards, each of which is a different character. Each character has a unique special ability, such as 'Forced Trade' or 'Move A Road'. The owner of this card can use this action once or twice - the decision is yours. If you use them once, you flip the tile to their 'B' side as a reminder. You can trade them in for one of the unclaimed Helpers. You can opt to keep them to use a second time, but then you must trade it for another Helper. As a result, you'll always have one Helper. The Helper called Vincent, for example, has an ability called 'Swords to Plowshares'. Vincent lets you return a Knight card (either in your hand, or already-played) and you can build at a discount. You could either build a settlement for 1 lumber and 1 brick (so you don't need sheep or wheat!). Or, you could upgrade a settlement to a city for 2 ore and 1 grain. (Again, a two-card discount!) The strategy comes with deciding when and how to best utilise the Helper. Remember, there might be a more appealing Helper out there. But at the same time, the other players might be eyeing up the Helper you're about to return to the supply!
