Introduction
As a family, we are always looking for games that are easy to get to the table but still offer something a little different. Dewan is a strategy game that focuses on collecting resources or building camps on each turn. This game felt to us like a crossover between Splendor and Catan, but without the luck of the dice..
Unboxing
Dewan comes in a large box with a clean and colourful design. The artwork is simple but appealing, and everything inside feels well made for the type of game it is.
The components are straightforward, with cards and tokens that are easy to handle and clearly designed. While there is nothing overly complex in the box, everything feels durable and suitable for regular use. One key point to be aware of is storage. To maximise the box space, the designer recommends using the cardboard punch-outs to raise the level of the internal insert - something we only realised after we had thrown them away.
Set up
Setup is reasonably simple and becomes easier the more you play. It is important to identify which components you need, as these vary depending on the version of the game you are playing.
The board itself also changes depending on player count and how the tiles are arranged. This means that each time you play, the layout feels slightly different, which adds to the replayability.
Game play
Gameplay in Dewan is straightforward and easy to follow. Players take turns selecting resource cards or placing a camp, with the aim of building the best combinations and scoring the most points. The decisions are simple, but there is still some thought involved in choosing what to take and when.
The game has a light strategic element, as players need to consider what others are collecting while also focusing on their own sets. There is some interaction, particularly when taking cards that others may want, but it never feels overly competitive.
Because of the simplicity of the rules, turns move quickly and the game flows well. It is easy to explain to new players and works well as an introduction to light strategy games.
I particularly enjoy that the game includes several different versions of play. While the core gameplay does not change, the addition of elements such as volcanoes or floods introduces small tactical differences, which we found added variety and kept the game feeling fresh.
Suitability
Dewan is well suited to families with older children and players who enjoy games with simple actions but some strategic decision-making. It works well as an introduction to resource management and planning, without being overwhelming.
Younger children may struggle with the planning element, while more experienced gamers may find it lacks depth over time. However, for casual play or family game nights, it fits well.
Final Thoughts
Dewan is a relatively easy-to-learn, quick-playing game that works well for families and casual players. It is simple to set up, easy to explain, and provides enough decision-making to keep players engaged without becoming overwhelming.
While it may not offer a great deal of depth for more experienced gamers, it is a reliable option for shorter game sessions and for introducing newer players to board gaming.
