It's the tale of a Great White Shark that terrorises the United States coastal town of Amity Island. To begin with, the mayor dismisses the attacks. Finally, police chief Brody, oceanographer Hooper and the eccentric Quint decide to hunt the killer shark. Ravensburger and Prospero Hall are on a roll at the moment. Alongside Disney (and Marvel) Villainous, they're releasing all the pop culture hits. Jaws is a one-versus-all kind of game, like Scotland Yard, Whitechapel, or Fury of Dracula. One to three players play as Brody, Quint and Hooper. Meanwhile, one player takes on the role of the villain-of-the-piece shark, itself!Jaws is a game of two halves. The first 'act', the Amity Island phase, mirrors the first half of the movie. The board represents the island itself. The (player playing as the) shark attempts to nibble on tourists. The human characters, meanwhile, try to spot the shark and protect swimmers from attacks in the water. For the second act, you flip the main board. Now you're on board The Orca, Quint's vessel. The ship is sinking, like the latter stages of Jaws. (Spoiler alert! But come on, everyone's seen Jaws, right?) Now the humans have to battle the shark in a tense, tight stand-off. You'll have to use action and strategy cards to both defend the poor Orca boat. At the same time, you'll try to defend yourself from the relentless, hungry shark! Character and event cards take centre stage, determining player abilities. They also create dramatic in-game actions for both the human characters, and the shark. If humans kill the shark, they take the victory. But if the player portraying the shark manages successful attacks on the Orca, they win! Think it's safe to go back into the water? Not a chance! Here you even get 18 pre-painted landmark buildings that end up in your capital city! In Tapestry, 1-5 players start out as tribes with variable powers at the dawn of humankind. This is a journey, the story of how your civilisation grows and comes to be. Everyone's aiming to score points by advancing in four tracks: Science, Technology, Exploration, and Military. Players start the game with next to nothing, except a vacant capital city. Soon though, they'll earn money, population, food, culture, 'Tapestry Cards' and exploration hex tiles...By paying relevant resources, you can advance your civilisation up these tracks. You earn more powerful rewards and benefits each time. Will you focus on one particular track? If you're the first to race along it, you can unlock wondrous buildings to add to your capital. Your capital is a personal spatial puzzle; you're aiming to fill it for points or resources. This dovetails with the more structures you remove off your player mat and into your capital. Not only does it help you fill your capital, you unlock further goodies. It's much like the system seen in Stonemaier's Scythe (or Great Western Trail). In some ways, Tapestry is an engine-builder. You're creating a tech tree and balancing resource management. Smart play allows you to pay for one move, which in itself funds a future turn. The world map (that you 'explore' with hex tiles) becomes modular with every play. Plus, there's asymmetrical player powers galore to try, each encouraging varying approaches. Your vault dwellers happiness is key so you will need to balance pushing them to work hard with looking out for their needs. Complicating this more are the monsters that should up and need a good battering! The game comes in a metal tine reminiscent of lunchbox tins that also feature in the mobile game. It also shares the cartoony art style and look throughout the components. Speaking of which the components are excellent throughout. From the vault dweller miniatures to the clear monster cards that over lay on the rooms it's great stuff! You will use you vault dwellers in a worker placement style to activate rooms, have babies and fight monsters. You are in charge of a whole level of the underground vault, but you can place in other levels, although the owner of that level will get a reward. Some spots require you to pay costs and you can manage your resources on a small player board that holds the cubes nicely in place. You can also train your dwellers using the familiar S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats allowing them to gain bonus when played in future rounds. Threats will come at the end of each round determined by dice rolls. To see them off you will need to place a dweller on them and roll off against them. This can be risky as your dweller might get injured. Battle of Legends, Volume One features four heroes. King Arthur sacrifices cards to power up his attacks and gets some timely assistance from Merlin's magic. Alice is back from Wonderland with a giant vorpal blade and the Jabberwock by her side as she grows and shrinks to gain advantages on attack and defense. What photos will you snap?A game of PARKS last four rounds (the four seasons of a year). Your two hikers move along a modular trail board, in a point-to-point fashion. Wherever you move your hiker, you'll gain any resource tokens on that spot. These resources represent 'memories': the fresh mountain vista; the splendour of sunshine; the scent of pine in the air. Locations along the trail also provide actions you can take. At the end of the season (round), you get the chance to trade your memory tokens for a National Park card. These are worth varying points, and the National Parks have required memories as a cost. You might also pay resources to take a photo (also worth points). Picking where you want your hikers to trek is a big decision, since set collection sits at the heart of PARKS.The trail gets longer with each passing season. With the start of a new season, the trail tiles get shuffled and re-laid out, along with an extra tile. No two hikers can share the same spot, so it's first-come, first-served. Unless, that is, you want to use your Campfire token. But you only get one of these per season, so light it with care! Also, if you can fill a Canteen with a water token you get access to harder-to-come-by memories. Other Gear cards offer further engine building options. In Nemesis players will each take control of a character waking up from hyper sleep with some serious problems. One being the hyper sleep fog that means they don't remember the layout of the ship, and the other being the multiple warnings going off and the dead body. From this point on Nemesis is a game of cat and mouse with the intruders (aliens) and potential the other players. At the start of the game each player is given two secret objective cards, and at the point that a player first meets an intruder everyone must chose one of these cards. Generally one card will have a more selfish goal and one a goal that benefits the team. Which they choose is up to them. Even if their goals are more team based they may unknowingly conflict with other team mates. Some may want to head the ship to Earth, others may want to go to Mars. As well as this players will have to be careful in their encounters with the intruders, lest they get infected. An infected player cannot win the game! It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but in its heyday, the city was a location of huge importance to the pre-Colombian Americas. This worker placement game has elements of tile-laying, a rondel with point-to-point movement, and added set collection. So, in other words, Teotihuacan: City of Gods features mechanics to please pretty much everyone who loves Euro-style board games! Teotihuacan: City of Gods sees up to four players being rival families, looking to gain fortune and favour from the gods, as well as contributing towards constructing (and decorating) the grand Pyramid of the Sun. You'll start with three dice of your colour, but these are never rolled. Instead, the pips represent the skill level and age of that worker. As they progress in certain tasks you'll increase this number - so it's kind of like Teotihuacan: The RPG. These are D6 dice, so when workers reach six, they immediately die. But death is a positive thing and it's celebrated here (kind of how it is in Village). Level-six workers 'ascend' to the gods and you receive a one-off bonus. The die is then reincarnated back to a Level-one worker. There are three scoring phases in Teotihuacan (known as eclipses), which means there are many different ways to score points. On their turn, players can move one of their dice up to three places clockwise around the eight different buildings. Some gain you resources; some allow you to spend resources to build (or decorate) the pyramid to score points. Some allow you to 'worship', where you lock a die into a location for a while, but you get an immediate reward. The board is also modular, meaning you can set it up differently each time. For your first few games you might want to stick with the default order of the eight buildings, but experienced players might want to mix them up for variety. Different technologies are available, which, if invested in, can sway players' strategies. There's also an array of different rewards available that can be designated towards climbing the three temples. Again, this means that different strategies might be adopted game to game depending on a random set-up, which leads to superb replay-ability. DÃivid Turczi has also created a solo variant, where you play against a Teoti-bot! If you've played Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar (also by same designer, Daniele Tascini), chances are you're going to love Teotihuacan: City of Gods. Here cocoa is a vital resource that's also a currency (like the corn in Tzolk'in), which you have to feed to your workers after each eclipse. Both have a looming end-game, and both are of course themed around Mesoamerican culture. They also are on the medium-heavy side of the Euro scale, with a lot of strategy and planning required. However, despite these similarities, Teotihuacan is a very different game, and well worth a spot on your shelf. This is a tile-drafting, pattern-building game, with set collection bonuses up for grabs. Here you're decorating a palace with Moorish azulejo tiles. The Portuguese king has commissioned you with a 5x5 pattern. Azul is a challenge to see who can impress the king with their tiled walls!Traditional azulejos are white and blue, but in Azul they come in five colours/patterns. And we're not talking cardboard punchboards or wooden tokens for components. The 100 'Starburst'-sized azulejo tiles are resin material. They make a wonderful clacking noise when jangled in the cloth bag! To start a round, four tiles get drawn from the bag and placed onto each 'factory'. Players take turns drafting tiles from any factory of their choice. Whenever they pick tiles from a factory, they have to take all tiles of a matching type present there. Those they don't draft join a new, separate factory. As the round wears on, this separate factory grows in size, but the drafting of tiles rule applies here, too. Players draft tiles until all factories sit empty. You're aiming to collect enough of one tile type to fill in thresholds on your player mat. At the end of each round, if you've filled up a threshold, you can stick said tile onto the wall! It's like Sudoku; once you've filled one tile-type onto the wall, it can't repeat on the same row or column. At first, you'll collect tiles in a laid-back fashion. But the pinch closes in during later rounds. Your options start to become ever-more specific. Other players can take note of your predicaments. Elements of push-your-luck enter the fray. Especially considering there's the chance you might get left with excess tiles you can't place! These class as 'smashed' tiles... And that means minus-points!Azul is a quick game to teach, and addictive to play. This fits the category of easy to learn, but tricky to master. It's easy to see why Azul has become an overwhelming modern classic! Such is Azul's wild success, it's spawned two sequels already - Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, and Azul: Summer Pavilion. Played in a series of 10 rounds, this abstract family game by Adrian Adamescu and Daryl Andrews sees players drafting dice from a central pool and adding them to the window grid on their lavishly illustrated player boards. Players are given two window cards during set-up and can choose a window pattern from the four available sides - they all offer different dice placement options and vary in complexity. Each round the first player will draw two dice per player, plus one additional die and roll them (so seven dice in a three-player game, for example). They will then choose a die to add to their window - the drafting continues in a clockwise direction until the last player has completed their turn - the last player will then take another turn as the drafting direction shifts to anti-clockwise, ending on the first player who will be left with a choice of two dice. Placement rules are such that a new die must be placed adjacent (either orthogonally or diagonally) to previously placed dice and no numbers of the same value or same coloured dice are ever allowed to sit orthogonally adjacent to each other. This presents a nice little special puzzle that some often compare to the popular number-placement puzzle, Sudoku. Three public objectives are drawn at the start of each game and can give players extra points when achieved. These can relate to filling rows or columns with colour varieties or counting up numbers of shades in their window. Each player also has a private objective that gives them points equivalent to the visible dice pips on a specific colour of dice in their window. Favour tokens can be spent on using tools - three of which are revealed during set-up - and these tools can give players special abilities that can aid them in times of need. But watch out, once a player has used a tool it becomes more expensive for subsequent use. Sagrada has proved to be a popular family game, and despite being recommended for ages 13+ on the box, it can easily be enjoyed by children of a younger age. Dice Forge is a beautifully illustrated, and well made game laced with engine building and a little luck. You start the game with two dice that are identical to everyone player's dice. As the game goes on however you will have the opportunity to buy more dice face which you will use to replace existing ones in a 'legoesque' fashion. Cleverly the faces themselves are used to lever off the ones you are replacing. Every turn in the game you will choose to spend gold or shards. Gold is spent on new dice face which can give you more resources, or unique effects, and shards on cards which give one time bonuses, ongoing upgrades, or end game points. The super powerful cards obviously cost more shards and the big scoring one costs shards of both types - sun and moon. All this is tracked through your own player board which holds cubes in place really well, so rather than constantly fiddling with resource pieces you are just moving a tracker up and down. There is a variety of cards in the game meaning that the game contains some variety out of the box - you will not see, let alone use, all the powers and die faces in one game alone. The game plays quickly and well with all player counts, and despite not being a pure family game has gone down very well with children from the age of five up. This is because you can easily explain the possible outcomes of every move they might make. Although there is a little luck as a result of the dice, you get a generous amount of rolls (you roll and receive the resources on everyone's turn, not just your own) and before long you have built dice that roll results you want pretty much all the time. Perhaps this is why it works so well - there is very little waiting around for other people to take their turns, you are either rolling your dice or watching what the other players are buying in case they grab something you wanted. At the end of each player turn, the game brings out more disease (coloured cubes) and existing locations can spread out via connecting routes. In a first for the series, player characters can acquire new skills, made worse or even be 'lost' across the campaign. The game itself sends out more disease by random dispersal of card draws meaning no two games will be similar. Adding in the ongoing legacy mechanic only serves to draw the players into a highly personal story where short term decisions can have long-term consequences. The components are very well produced including a lot of secrets that we cannot possibly describe here. As you progress through the campaign, the story deck of cards (don't peek...) will tell you what to unlock next as well as giving new briefing information. The game packs down well, saving your game state from month to month as you play over multiple sessions. Here players are rival, caricatured bandits on board a locomotive, attempting to become the richest outlaw during a good old-fashioned train robbery. There's no board in Colt Express - instead, the action takes place within physical 3-D train carriages that sit on the table. They look delightful and get players excited straight away (we estimate 10 seconds before you hear the first 'Yee-haw!'). But these are not just a gimmick from Ludonaute - instead, they quite literally set the scene. A variety of loot, in the form of $250-$500 purses and $500 gems, is placed within the carriages, and the honourable Marshal Samuel Ford, the one honest man on board, starts in the locomotive car. He's guarding a briefcase worth an eye-watering $1,000. The bandits - with asymmetrical player powers - start in the caboose, and they have five rounds to scheme and steal as much of this loot as possible. Each player has a deck of ten cards, with actions that range from: - Floor Change (onto the roof or down into a carriage). - Moving (along one carriage or across multiple carriages if you're on the roof). - Shooting (a rival bandit and giving them a useless bullet card, which clogs up their deck for the next round). - Punching (a rival bandit into an adjacent carriage and causing them to drop a piece of loot). - Robbery (picking up a piece of loot in your current carriage); - Moving the Marshal (who can also shoot bandits if they're in the same carriage). Players deal themselves six cards. One at a time they can play an action card into the common deck; sometimes they'll have to play them face-up for all to see and memorise, sometimes face-down. Once a set number of cards have been played - these differ, round to round - they are then activated in chronological order, which is when the madness begins... Bullets, fistfights and the dropping of loot occur all over the place, and not always the way players intended them! Colt Express won the Spiel des Jahres award (the Family Game of the Year) in 2015, and it's certainly a family-friendly game that players shouldn't take too seriously. Since you can only see a percentage of the programmed actions, you need to calculate the odds of your perfect move being achievable. However, more often than not, the laughter comes when your plans go out the window and you have to suddenly adapt. If you're a fan of other program-movement titles such as River Dragons, Robo Rally and Lords of Xidit, then Colt Express is the rootin'-tootin' ride for you. Set in the Japanese Emperor's garden, 2-4 players will compete in an action points allowance system, where they are aiming to complete secret mini-missions - whether that be feed the panda or grow the garden to a particular size (or height). The garden in Takenoko starts out as one hexagonal pond tile. Two pre-painted minis - the panda and the gardener - begin here. This garden will grow in a modular fashion through the game as player attempt to race to complete seven Objective Cards (in a four-player game). There are five different actions players can pick from on their turn. They have to pick two different actions from the following:

Draw three garden plots (hex tiles), pick one to lay into the garden and discard the other two.
Take an irrigation channel from the reserve.
Move the gardener in a straight line (thus increasing the bamboo to grow in that plot as well as on adjacent tiles of the same colour).
Move the panda in a straight line ('eating' - removing - a piece of bamboo from that tile).
Draw a face-down Objective Card.

The key to Takenoko is completing those Objectives. They range from feeding certain types or quantities of bamboo to the panda (there are common green tiles that grow green bamboo, less-common yellow, and rarer-still pink), to having certain alignments of garden terrain (such as a row of 3x yellows, for example), to having a certain amount of bamboo grown in a certain tile. Rather deliciously, these objectives butt heads somewhat, because while Player A is trying to grow bamboo using the gardener, Player B might be more interested in feeding it to the panda! To add spice, tiles have to be within an irrigation network in order to grow bamboo, so tile placement is a real consideration. Some tiles will also have symbols on them, meaning that bamboo grows at twice the rate, or perhaps it cannot be fed to the panda at all. These symbols can also be acquired to place on plain tiles, meaning you can control the layout to a degree. There is no limit as to how many Objective Cards you complete on your turn, but your hand size is limited. Helpfully, on your turn you also roll a Weather Die, which will inform you which of the six bonuses the weather gives you (ranging from an additional third action to select, to having the option to take the same action twice, and so on). Takenoko is wonderfully vivid. And since there are literal bamboo towers that you'll build, along with a cute, mini panda moving about, it gathers lots of attention from curious passers-by. Gameplay is simple to grasp, and games last about 45 minutes. Simply put, Antoine Bauza's Takenoko ticks every box going for being a brilliant gateway game! It is highly thematic with gorgeous over produced in-game components allowing players to be inventive and interact with lots of table discussion. In Mysterium, players take on the roles of gifted mediums with the ability to communicate with the undead. One player becomes the ghost whose spirit is doomed to forever haunt the mansion after becoming the victim of a hideous crime. They attempt to reveal to the players the truth of what actually happened; who murdered them, how they did it and where it took place. Each medium is secretly gifted a selection of three potential combinations, noted behind the ghost players cardboard screen. The mediums are working towards their own goal independent of each other, however they are still considered as working as one team. All players win or lose as a group. The twist is that the ghost is unable to communicate in way other than give the other players a selection of highly stylistic dreamlike images on tarot cards. These are dealt to each individual player, once a round, to help them correctly identify their targets. Each card is a beautiful piece of surreal artwork, which can be read in many ways. It is up to the mediums to try to interpret the ghosts' subtle nudges. The ghost can only present selected images from their hand of cards, which can limit what they want to say immeasurably, often to comic effect. Cards that show the potential suspects, weapon and location are placed on the table across three levels. Each round a medium will place one of their markers on a card confirming their choice. Once a player correctly guesses part of their combination they can progress to the next. Other players can also gain bonus points for agreeing or disagreeing with their fellow mediums over choices made. Mysterium continues over 7 rounds and if the mediums each manage to gather their personal combination and progress through the 3 separate levels then the final round takes place. All players' options are revealed on the table and at this point there is one more round of visions dealt to the mediums, as they have to work out whose combination was actually the true story of what happened. If they correctly guess then the ghost can rest peacefully and everyone wins. Set in an alternate reality 1920's Europe, the game focuses on expanding your faction's dominance across territory whilst harvesting resources, creating upgrades and battling your enemies. Whilst not exclusively a game about conflict, Scythe rewards players for conducting many different types of engine building leading to great variety in play styles. Each of the five factions in the box have different special abilities and these are paired each game with a different economic player board. During the turn each player chooses one of four unique actions from the player board, which also gives a secondary bonus action. These actions move the faction workers, launch mechs and leader across the board, adding buildings and even upgrade their own options by manipulating the player board. The game is surprisingly swift, even at higher play counts due to the pairing down of actions per turn. As players complete goals, such as bringing all four of their mechs onto the board they begin to collect stars. After a faction has laid down their sixth star this triggers the end game. The winner of the game is faction with the most coins. Scythe also contains a fully realised single player module, where the player competes against an 'Automa' A.I. A deck of cards controls the A.I. player faction and offers a compelling experience as an alternative to the multiplayer game. Visually, Scythe looks stunning on the table. From the sweeping lands on the board to the faction leaders design, all the artwork is dramatically evocative. The leaders and mechs are all unique sculpts for each faction. Workers and materials are made up of wooden markers. Whilst complete, the game is upgradable with expansions that increase the player count, add more game modules, event cards and most recently a legacy campaign mechanic.
