Poorly equipped, with little to no training, the Volkssturm was made up of the older men and young boys who had previously been considered unfit or unready for normal military service.
The 3/115 Siemensstadt Battalion was better organised and equipped than most Volkssturm formations. It comprised 770 men, mainly First World War veterans in their 50s who were reasonably fit factory workers, with experienced officers. It had three rifle companies and a support company with heavy machine guns, mortars and infantry guns.

Capable of firing up to 800 rounds a minute, the MG34 had a unique feature of being able to produce semi-automatic or fully automatic fire depending on which part of the trigger was used. Another important feature of the MG34 was the ability to quickly change barrels due to the overheating associated with prolonged periods of use.

It could be used as either a Light Machine-gun fired off a bipod or as a Heavy Machine-gun fired from a tripod.
