The Traitors Board Game second opinion

Box of "The Traitors" board game with bold orange text on a dark background, featuring a silhouette of a hooded figure. Tagline: "Get them before they get you."
There’s a particular kind of tension that fans of The Traitors know all too well. It’s that delicious, slow-burn paranoia where every raised eyebrow feels like a confession and every silence is deafening. So sitting down with the Traitors board game, I wasn’t just hoping for a good time… I was hoping for betrayal, suspicion, and at least one dramatic finger-point across the table.

Good news: it almost delivers. From the moment roles are secretly handed out, the game taps into the same heartbeat as the show. If you’re a Faithful, you’re scanning faces like a detective in a crime drama. If you’re a Traitor, you’re suddenly an amateur actor, trying not to grin while quietly plotting everyone’s downfall. It’s social deduction at its core, but wrapped in the familiar cloak-and-dagger drama that made the TV series so addictive.

What really works is the atmosphere. Even in a living room in Yorkshire with a cup of tea going cold, you can feel like you’re sitting around that famous round table. Accusations start cautiously, then escalate into full-blown courtroom speeches. Someone always says, “I just have a feeling…” and suddenly alliances crumble like biscuits dunked too long.

That said, it’s not quite a perfect translation from screen to table. The TV show thrives on layered twists, secret missions, and the guiding hand of Claudia Winkleman adding theatrical flair. Unfortunately I do not have the fringe to carry this off and you find that the board game, by necessity, trims some of the TV shows spectacle. The mechanics are simpler, which keeps things accessible, but occasionally you might miss the deeper strategy or those jaw-dropping mid-episode turns.

Where it shines brightest is with the right group. Play it with people who are willing to lean in, bluff outrageously, and maybe hold a grudge for five dramatic minutes, and it sings. Play it with quieter or more reserved players, and it can feel a bit like a mystery novel where no one wants to turn the page.

In the end, as a fan of the show, it feels less like a replica and more like a tribute band that knows all the best songs. It captures the spirit, the suspicion, and the social chaos, even if it can’t quite recreate the full televised spectacle.

Scores

Good Points

  • Captures the paranoia and suspicion that fans of The Traitors love
  • Easy to learn, so you can get straight into the deception without a long rules slog
  • Brilliant for lively groups who enjoy bluffing, accusing, and a bit of theatrical drama
  • High replay value thanks to different roles and unpredictable player behaviour
  • Creates memorable moments where friendships are “temporarily” questioned

Bad points

  • Lacks some of the depth and twists that make the TV show so gripping
  • Heavily dependent on the group. quieter players may struggle to get involved
  • Doesn’t quite replicate the atmosphere brought by Claudia Winkleman and the show’s production.
  • Some players may feel targeted or singled out, which isn’t for everyone.
