Sea, Salt & Paper - a tactical card game of captains, sharks and risk

Origami boats on a blue marbled background with bold, white text reading "Sea Salt & Paper." The tone is creative and nautical.

Basic Gameplay

Sea Salt & Paper is a card game for 2–4 players where your goal is to become the most successful captain of the seas. To win, you must be the first to reach the target score: 40 points in a 2-player game, 35 with 3 players, or 30 with 4. Played over several rounds, the game has simple rules with clever card effects and tactical decisions about when to push your luck or end a round. A full game usually lasts about 30 minutes, making it quick to play while still offering plenty of opportunities for strategic gameplay.

In each round, you have a simple choice: take one of the two visible cards, or draw two cards from the central deck, keep one, and return the other to the top of one of the two discard piles.

When returning a card to a discard pile, you can influence what other players might pick up. For example, if you suspect another player is collecting a particular card type, you might place an unhelpful card on top of the pile to make it harder for them to get what they need. Alternatively, if you’re holding valuable cards in your hand, you might try to block access to combinations like Sharks and Swimmers, which, when played together, allow a player to steal cards.

After adding a card to your hand, you can choose to play a pair of cards in front of you. Cards are played in combinations that trigger special abilities. For example, playing a pair of Crabs allows you to search through a discard pile and add a card to your hand. Cards placed in front of you are also protected from the Sharks and Swimmers ability, meaning they cannot be stolen, allowing you to safely bank some points.

Pairs are not the only cards in the game. There are also multipliers, mermaids, and collector cards that remain hidden in your hand rather than being played in front of you, adding an element of mystery as players try to guess what others might be holding..

Mermaids are particularly important. If a player manages to collect all four mermaids, the game immediately ends, and that player wins. Even having a single mermaid can be valuable, as each one scores points based on the number of cards you have of the same colour. For example, if you have three blue cards, a mermaid would score you three additional points.

This introduces another strategic layer: card colours. Some colours appear more frequently than others, so choosing which colours to collect can become an important tactical decision.

A round ends once a player reaches 7 points in their hand. At that point, they must decide whether to stop the round immediately or call “last chance.” If you stop the round, everyone counts the points from their cards and adds them to their total score.

Calling “last chance” is the riskier option. You’re betting that even after every other player takes one final turn, you will still have the highest score of the round. If your gamble pays off, you score your points and gain a colour bonus, while your opponents receive only the colour bonus. It’s a risky move, but it can open up a large gap in points between you and the other players.

Replayability

Sea Salt & Paper has excellent replayability. The combination of simple rules and multiple strategic layers means that each round can play out differently.

Much of this comes from the different strategies available. You might focus on collecting colours for mermaid bonuses, collecting and playing ability cards, or try to disrupt your opponent’s plans by controlling the discard piles. There’s also a strong element of reading the other players, anticipating what they might be collecting, and trying to outmanoeuvre them, so playing with different opponents adds another layer of unpredictability.

Another factor that boosts replayability is the game’s small box size. Sea Salt & Paper is easy to take almost anywhere, whether that’s the pub, a train journey, a holiday, or a board game night with friends. Its portability makes it an ideal game to bring out whenever you have a bit of spare time.

It’s also very easy to teach. Explaining the core rules usually takes around 5–10 minutes, and once players have completed their first round, the rest of the game quickly comes together.

Round Up

Sea Salt & Paper is a deceptively simple card game that hides a surprising amount of strategy beneath its small deck. The rules are easy to grasp, but the decisions around when to play cards, what to discard, and whether to risk calling “last chance” keep each round engaging.

The game’s portability and short playtime make it incredibly easy to bring to any occasion. Whether you’re filling half an hour at home, playing during a board game night, or passing the time on a journey.

What really stands out is the balance between luck and strategy. While the cards you draw will always influence your options, clever use of the discard piles and careful observation of your opponents can make a big difference. For a small-box card game, Sea Salt & Paper offers an impressive amount of replayability and player interaction.

If you enjoy quick tactical card games with risk-taking, this is definitely one worth adding to your collection. It also plays well as a 2-player game, which can be a challenge for some other games.

Sea, Salt & Paper does offer two expansions Extra Salt and Extra Pepper, so if you find yourself enjoying this game, these expansions offer the opportunity to add new twists to an already solid game.
