Epic Encounters – Village of the Goblin Chief review

Whoop, whoop lets go play in the autumn wind swept forest with its rainbow leaf litter carpeting the trails, a cheerful path into the darkness, not by the shortening of daylight hours but an evil menace… best not go alone.

Village of the Goblin Chief, designed to fit with DND 5th Edition. This unit contains a full encounter booklet, six medium and fourteen small unpainted miniature and illustrated battle map. The unit is designed to be a flexible encounter and can be played as a standalone adventure, necessary element along the way, or a side quest in a campaign. The Games Master (GM) will need to have to assess the players levels and pitch the difficulty but reading the full encounter booklet rather than scanned over will give the depth of the scenario and characters to make it a truly Epic Encounter.

Epic Encounters – Village of the Goblin Chief at play:

Village of the Goblin Chief, the game is designed as a battle encounter for any games master role playing game, primarily for a DND 5th Edition adventure, modification would be needed to any other role-playing system. The players play co-operatively unless you are a sneaky spy, to complete the scenario objective. The scenario is outlined to stop the Goblin infiltration and the village of the Bloodwood goblins from attacking local villages, and traders enroute through or around the once pleasant forest now darkened by evil and decay and take the Goblin’s out. A band of plucky adventurers could save the day, or they might of course think it is a best avoided, and head further south of the mountain, to the islands with coconut trees and sun, sea and sand. The GM manages the encounter, so if it is too challenging the scenario can be adjusted i.e. the Goblins have to be subdued and their Hetman must be defeated, or the forest will fall into total decay and that rumour of a Hydra needs checking out too. Some extra help is likely needed to prop up your teams’ weak points as the party will eventually end in a full-frontal assault after sneaking around for a bit, so maybe a few thieves and assassins to improve your chances when they are overrun by goblins and their pets.

Booklets, Maps & Miniatures:

Village of the Goblin Chief, booklet contains, a detailed scenario and background of Bloodwood goblins, and their pet minion abilities and behaviour in battle or play, as well as the Goblin’s perspective on what they need and what the outcomes could be. The booklet provides guidance on difficulty, stats, and background from the Goblin camp and their pet’s grotto. The battle map is beautifully illustrated and on decent quality paper and is double sided one side with the Goblin tree top camp and the other side their pet’s lair, but you will need to flatten it out. The Village of the Goblin Chief has twenty miniatures with eight separate sculpts and are all unpainted and unprimed but are very nicely detailed, but the green plastic doesn’t accentuate the detail. The pieces are, five medium size miniatures in three sculpts, of their pet and four arrow tonged frog riders & 15 small / medium miniatures of five sculpts, of Hetmen and then the goblin troops three of two sculps and four of two other sculps, but the set is more generous & detailed compared to the Local Encounter sets.

‘How do hydra teeth make skeleton warriors?’ asked the young Paladin,

‘Some undead curse by a necromancer,’ said the white Wizard.

‘Sounds like a Don Juan vampiric magic user Neck-romancer’ smirked the young Paladin,

‘Well technically yes as they draw on life’s energy to power the dead,’ said the white Wizard.

‘Is this another Wizards challenge thing, the hydra teeth?’ asked the young Paladin,

‘No, we are working for a necromancer,’ said the white Wizard.

‘That’s not cool, I thought we agreed we were against evil’ said the young Paladin sternly,

‘He is a good necromancer, an unconventional hero if you like,’ said the white Wizard.

‘Guess he has a hell hound called spot, and if it chews your arm off it brings it back to you too’. Said the Paladin rolling his eyes.

‘Well, his dragon is called Spot, and I think you would like his apprentice too.’ Said the white Wizard with a smile.

‘Opposites attract and all that is it.’ Said the Paladin mockingly

‘Many a true word said in jest, well done my young Palidin, spot on.’ Said the white Wizard

‘Um, thank you?’ Said the young Paladin looking confused

Epic encounters have been written to be challenging and it is the duty of the GM to balance the adventure with the player ability and bringing in extra help to tip the balance is allowed as you are in charge right, but balancing is always the best way and letting in extra help or allow aid to come if needed for either your team or the Goblin’s.

Life after Epic Encounters – Village of the Goblin Chief:

Expansions for Epic Encounters. There are several expansions available, but this set is twinned with Swamp of the Hydra.

Encounter Scenarios – these sets include a double-sided illustrated battle map although several are just a repeated map with a ninety-degree rotation and are either one large sculpt or up to twenty detailed unpainted miniatures. All include a full encounter booklet covering the background and scenario details and guidance to make an epic encounter.
