Cats Among the Pigeons - Kickstarter preview

I feel truly privileged to have been able to playtest a demo deck because Cats Among the Pigeons is a delight. The kickstarter is presently live at the time of writing and already successfully funded which is awesome to see. Players have until the 26th of April to back this campaign.

Rules Overview

The game is a simple one to learn but with plenty of laughter when we have been having our games.

The objective is simple: collect 7 pigeons of the same colour in your hand of cards, and have no cats present. If you have a cat, you cannot win.

Players are dealt their starting hand, then on their turn, players can

Play as many cards as they want in their hand that they are able to.

Discard 2 pigeons of the same colour to draw a card.

Discard 3 cat cards from their hand to get rid of them. It has to be 3.

When the player has played, draw a card and play passes on. That’s it.

The cards that can be played are the action cards and there are plenty of these, all with different rules printed on that makes this game.

What has been great about the game?

The action cards, they make the game and bring the entertainment in this highly fun card game. I don’t want to spoil what is printed but when the game says it is “chaotic and fun” it is these cards that bring that and Level 46 Games are not wrong in pitching it this way.

I love a simple card game with plenty of random chance elements that come into the game. If you are familiar with the works of Gamewright games and all the card games they offer, you will feel right at home here with what Level 46 Games have created. It is that random chaos that is the genius in the game.

I love a game that is also simple to pick up and understand. With the rules printed on a single side of paper you are playing the game very quickly which can be the perfect way to warm up a gaming session or finish one. It is also only a single set of cards, meaning you can take it anywhere with you, this one would easily become a welcome game to include in our holiday backpack because of this simple set up.

What’s been cool is I really cannot pick a fault with it. When given a copy to practice I got everything out of it I was expecting. If anything I got more because I didn’t expect the content of the action cards making the game. I really enjoyed it and wouldn’t want to make changes.

The best part of the game was all the laughter that came with it. It’s not a serious game and brought a lot of joy to our tabletop and we are very thankful for that. It has been a joy to try out.

Final Thoughts

Congratulations Level 46 Games in smashing your Kickstarter goal already with time to spare. I hope your backers enjoy the game as much as I have. For those reading this that haven’t backed you still have time, the 26th of April is your deadline.
