Vampire Survivors; The indie smash from Poncle, which went from a tiny passion project to one of the most addictive video games around, is now getting a tabletop adaptation. It’s heading to Kickstarter this autumn with Grey Fox Games handling the publishing.
From humble beginnings to viral phenomenon
When Vampire Survivors first crept onto Steam back in December 2021, nobody could have predicted how big it would become. Built on a budget, the game’s simple premise was impossible to resist: survive as long as you can while swarms of enemies pour in from all directions. The catch? Attacks are automatic. All you do is move your character, hoover up XP gems and choose new weapons or upgrades whenever you level up.
That tiny loop – dodge, survive, power up, repeat – turned into one of the most addictive gaming experiences in years. The game exploded in popularity, eventually spreading to consoles and mobile, picking up awards, and even nabbing a BAFTA!
Bringing the chaos to the tabletop
Now, Poncle are teaming up with Grey Fox Games (publishers of Champions of Midgard and Deception: Murder in Hong Kong) to see if that same energy can work in board game form. Details are still under wraps, but early teases hint at plenty of familiar elements making the jump across.
Players will choose from recognisable survivors, kit them out with evolving weapons and face down waves of monsters straight out of the digital version. Weapons and passives will level up as you go, giving that all-important feeling of growing stronger against impossible odds. And yes, Red Death – the game’s infamous reaper who shows up to end your run no matter what – will be making an appearance too.
A Kickstarter worth watching
The campaign is set to launch later this year, and fans can already sign up for updates on the official site. There’s even a little sweetener: a free deck box for backers who pledge once the project goes live.
We don’t know exactly how Grey Fox and Poncle are going to translate the auto-battling chaos into a tabletop ruleset yet, but if they nail the pacing, Vampire Survivors: The Board Game could be something special…
