Fans still awaiting news on the next chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy may not have long to wait - but in the meantime, Square Enix has introduced something a little different. A brand-new tabletop title set in Midgar is on the way, offering a fresh way to revisit one of the series’ most memorable moments.

A New Take on Midgar

Final Fantasy VII: Ascend the Shinra Tower is a cooperative board game inspired by the events surrounding the Shinra Building. Rather than a traditional strategy experience, it leans into a dexterity-based format, drawing comparisons to stacking games while still tying closely to the world of Final Fantasy VII.

Players work together to construct the Shinra Tower piece by piece, guiding Cloud Strife to the eighth floor without the structure collapsing. With uneven components and an increasingly unstable build, coordination across the table is key.

Familiar Faces, New Format

The game features a selection of recognisable characters, including Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, and Sephiroth, represented as stylised wooden pieces. Players will also make use of action cards that can shift the balance of play, adding light strategy to the physical challenge.

Designed for 1–5 players, sessions are expected to last between 15 and 30 minutes, making it a relatively quick cooperative option.

Collaboration and Release Details

The project is being developed in partnership with Arclight Games, known for similar stacking-style experiences. Ascend the Shinra Tower follows another recent tabletop announcement, highlighting a growing push into board games for the Final Fantasy series.

The game is currently available to pre-order via Square Enix’s Japanese store, with a release set for November 6, 2026. There’s no confirmation yet on a wider international release, but it’s one to keep an eye on for fans of both tabletop gaming and the Final Fantasy universe.

While it may not be the next major video game instalment, this latest reveal offers a lighter way to spend time in Midgar - and a different perspective on a familiar story beat.
