King of Tokyo has been smashing its way through board game tables for years, but now there’s a much bigger monster in town!
King of Tokyo Godzilla takes Richard Garfield’s classic dice-chucking game and gives it a full Godzilla makeover, bringing some of cinema’s most famous kaiju into the battle for Tokyo. The result keeps the easy-to-learn gameplay of the original while adding some new tricks to the mix!
Same game, bigger monsters!
If you’ve played King of Tokyo before, you’ll feel right at home here. Players take control of giant monsters and compete to become the ultimate ruler of Tokyo. Each turn, you roll six dice up to three times, choosing which results to keep and which to roll again. The dice can help you deal damage, recover health, collect Energy, or earn Victory Points. Getting into Tokyo can also be a great way to score points, but staying there puts a giant target on your back! The first monster to reach 20 Victory Points wins, although being the last monster standing will also secure victory. Simple? Absolutely. Boring? Definitely not!
Godzilla gets an upgrade!
The biggest change is obviously the theme. Instead of generic monsters battling it out, King of Tokyo Godzilla brings together six iconic kaiju from the Godzilla universe. Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla are among the monsters appearing in the game, with each one getting its own style and abilities. The artwork also gives the game a completely different feel. The monsters and post-war Tokyo setting have been given a more cinematic look, making this version feel a little more grown-up than the colourful original.
But the changes aren't just cosmetic!
New ways to cause trouble!
King of Tokyo Godzilla introduces Event Cards, which can create problems for everyone at the table. These effects can stick around until players spend Energy to deal with them, forcing everyone to decide whether they should focus on their own monster or work together to remove a threat. Evolution Cards are another major addition. Each kaiju has its own Evolution deck, giving monsters special abilities that can change how they play. Some abilities are temporary, while others stick around for the rest of the game. This gives players more decisions to make without turning King of Tokyo into a rulebook marathon!
A new king?
Despite the additions, King of Tokyo Godzilla still plays in roughly 30 minutes, keeping the fast and chaotic feel that made the original so popular. It won't completely change the minds of players who dislike the game's reliance on luck, but for everyone else, this could be one of the most exciting versions yet! If you like Godzilla, giant monsters or simply enjoy throwing dice and causing problems for your mates, this one looks like a serious contender for the Tokyo throne!
