One Piece Card Game: (OP12) Booster Box review

Prepare the sails and hoist the anchor, we’re setting sail with another exciting new set for the One Piece Trading Card Game. This time, loyalty, discipline and focus are on the line as we observe the unbreakable bonds between characters in OP12: Legacy of the Master.

Master of Haki

Most sets in the One Piece Trading Card Game whisk us off to one of the many memorable islands that the Straw Hat Crew visit on their adventures, but OP12 is different. This time around, Bandai are using this set to showcase some of the cherished bonds between characters that we’ve met in the manga.

This includes Zoro and Mihawk, Luffy and Rayleigh, and Kuma and Bonney; to mention a few. And these pairs are showcased in a variety of ways throughout the set. From Leaders and playable characters, to Manga rares and combo pieces.

Legacy of the one Piece

This exciting new set introduces 128 unique cards to the game, consisting of:

● 6 x Leaders

● 45 x Commons

● 30 x Uncommons

● 26 x Rares

● 10 x Super Rares

● 2 x Secret Rares

● 6 x Special Cards

● 1 x Treasure Rare

● 2 x 3rd Anniversary Special Cards

● 1 x DON!! Card

And as with every main set in the One Piece Trading Card Game, each of your emerald green packs is full to the brim with 12 cards. Two of these cards are guaranteed to have a rarity of rare or higher; meaning that one of them could even be the Manga Jewelry Bonney that I mentioned earlier. Of course, you might also find leaders and Don!! Waiting for you, so the only way to find out is to crack the pack.

Loyal disciples

With every new set comes power spikes and formidable new leaders that shake up the meta and force other decks to change to meet the new threats. It’s of no surprise that OP12 follows suit by introducing leaders such as Mono Green Zoro and Mono Red Rayleigh that can be difficult to play around.

Mono Green Zoro takes aggro decks to a whole new level by giving players the opportunity to attack twice a turn with their leader, providing their first attack hits a character. Paired with cards Perona, and Dracule Mihawk from this set, you’ll have the cards you need to set you on the winning curve, and the active don to play them.

And then we have Mono Red Rayleigh, a different kind of aggro that utilises all the best aggressive cards that the red archetype has to offer. Equipped with a restrictive ability, Rayleigh may seem quite a weak leader with no late game bombs to drop. However, being able to buff a variety of classic rush cards such as Kid & Killer, Zoro and Luffy from previous sets, means that this deck can be swinging lethal before most other decks have even gotten started.

But it’s not all about the leaders, as there are a good few cards that take old leaders and archetypes to a whole new level. For instance, take Batholomew Kuma; a 6 cost, 7k power character that nets you a life on play and a life on KO. Talk about value! Or, like father like daughter, we have Jewelry Bonney which not only has blocker, but can also net you 2 cards and unrest a don card too.

Needless to say, the power creep has been turned up to 11 in this set, with a variety of character cards that pack punches in every angle.

Drawing the short Straw Hat

Of all recent sets for the One Piece Trading Card Game, this is one of the most gameshaking that we have had in a while. And although players are right to worry about the power spikes that have emerged with the new leaders, it has given the rest of the meta a reason to refresh, rebuild and to get stronger.

Already we’ve seen new decks emerge like Foxy and King that haven’t been touched since their releases. Which is the reason why new sets are so exciting for competitive players such as myself. New mechanics mean new opportunities, and I for one can’t wait to start exploring them.

Which neatly brings me to the end of my OP12 review! A set which has more spikes than a heart monitor, and more opportunities than ever to stop your deck flatlining mid game.

I hope you’ve found this useful, and I hope I’ve inspired you to pick up a few packs for yourself. Because who knows, you might just find yourself a manga rare beneath that foil!

No matter what you pull though, we are always excited to see what you get. So as always, make sure to share your hits with us on any social media platform using @zatugames.

Until the next set, good luck, and may the card draws be ever in your curve!
