Imagidice is a lovely little and really simple game great for developing children’s (and adults) imaginations. A fun filled game of story creation, what will your team create?
Gameplay
A game for 2-4 people (I would argue one person could play if they wanted, though not so social) that takes around 20 minutes or so. It’s a cooperative game as well that players can work together on. Interestingly it is a game without winning or losing which I have never seen before in a game.
Players roll the 12 D6 dice creating a pool of options. Each die is unique with the 6 pictures on each face. These pictures revealed on the dice form the options for players to create their story. Players take turns to pick the dice they want to start on and continue the story. Players with the category selected just build up the story, play passes on and so on until all 12 dice have been used and the team has their story which is red back allowed for all to enjoy.
Imagination
I have never played such a game before and typically it is not a game I would go for. That being said my children and I really enjoyed playing it as it is a wonderful game for triggering imaginative thoughts and story creations. The idea’s they were coming up with I could not have begun to create and that is a wonderful attribute for the game. Different people with different experiences bring different elements to the story and you just see where the gaming journey goes. I was never coming up with a witch flying off to outer space, my children did though.
12 dice
Imagidice is not much to look at. 12 plain white D6 dice with black lines to create small pictures. Maybe that is the point though, they offer very little so the mind does all the work in the story generation. I feel that this was quite clever, even to the point that my children interpreted the pictures as different things. For example one child saw what looked like a house, possibly, but the other thought cup cake… Who is to say who is right here?
So many stories
There are 72 different pictures within the set allowing for an incredible amount of combinations to create stories. There is a bit of mileage in this game for different options to go try. Then simply changing the narrative against one picture changes how the rest of the story could play out, it’s really quite clever there. The only slight drawback is with children. I do think the game will lose interest after a couple of rounds, but then I feel that is actually probably enough in a single sitting. It is something that is easy to come back to.
Final Thoughts.
I really appreciated the subtlety of Imagidice. It is definitely the simple things that can really make a game and watching the minds of my children spin about how they can create the story in any way they wanted in connection with the picture printed on the dice was really incredible to see what they generated. With more plays I can easily see the imaginations going further and more detailed stories come together at the end of play.
Playing a game without winning or losing as well was a real novelty. It turns out you don’t always need to win. This game is a winner though if you are looking to spark some creative thinking in your children, so if you are looking for that give it a go.
