Epic Encounters – Hall of the Orc King Review

Epic Encounters – Hall of the Orc King Preparation:

Brrrr. Time to fish out those mittens and thermal under, and over wear. Grab your shield and let’s go sledding and slaying at the Orc King’s residence.

Hall of the Orc King, designed to fit with DND 5th Edition. This unit contains a full encounter booklet, four medium and sixteen small unpainted miniature and illustrated battle map. The unit is designed to be a flexible encounter and can be played as a standalone adventure, necessary element along the way, or a side quest in a campaign. The Games Master (GM) will need to have to assess the players levels and pitch the difficulty but reading the full encounter booklet rather than scanned over will give the depth of the scenario and characters to make it a truly Epic Encounter.

Epic Encounters – Hall of the Orc King at play:

Hall of the Orc King, the game is designed as a battle encounter for any games master role playing game, primarily for a DND 5th Edition adventure, modification would be needed to any other role-playing system. The players play co-operatively unless you are a sneaky spy, to complete the scenario objective. The scenario is outlined to stop the emboldened Grimfang Orcs from attacking local villages and put the orcs back to where they belong, under the ground. A band of plucky adventurers could save the day, or they might of course think it is a bit parky out, and head further down the mountain, to the sun kissed valley, with it’s clear babbling brook, just a stone throw away from the local tavern. The GM manages the encounter, so if it is too challenging the scenario can be adjusted i.e. the Grimfang Orcs have to be defeated and their King has to be brought down a peg or two, some extra help is likely needed to prop up your teams’ weak points as the party will eventually end in a full-frontal assault after sneaking around for a bit, so maybe a few thieves and assassins to improve your chances when the green rage arrives.

Booklets, Maps & Miniatures:

Hall of the Orc King, booklet contains, a detailed scenario and background of the Hall of the King lands, Orc & minion abilities and behaviour in battle or play, as well as Grimfang’ s perspective on what it needs and what outcomes could be. The booklet provides guidance on difficulty, stats, and background from the Hall and the approach area to the hall. The battle map is beautifully illustrated and on decent quality paper and is double sided one side with the surrounding area to the Hall and the other side the Hall itself, but you will need to flatten it out. The Hall of the Orc King has twenty miniatures with nine separate sculpts and are all unpainted and unprimed but are very nicely detailed. The pieces are, four medium sized of one sculpt & three medium/small miniatures of two sculpts and two medium/small in four sculpts, and then the King and his cook which are also medium to small, but the set is more generous & detailed compared to the Local Encounter sets.

‘Why are we here again.’ asked the young Paladin with teeth chattering and shivering so much his sword tinkled regularly against his grieves.

‘We need a whisker of an Ice Giant,’ said the white Wizard.

‘Yes, but why.’ Said the young Paladin in exasperated tone.

‘It’s for the White Wizard challenge,’ advised the white Wizard rolling his eyes.

‘So, what was the plan?’ Said the young Paladin.

‘I don’t know, guess we find the giant, I trap or distract it, while you cut a hair off which ever bit you can reach,’ said the white Wizard with a smirk.

‘Are you crazy, we will never outrun it, can’t we just grab some downstream from wear they wash or shave, they are always clean shaven on their legs for some bizarre reason.’ Said the young Paladin.

‘Hmm, it will be totally gross, but yes and absolutely survivable, well dome my young Paladin, and we will save money too, as we won’t need to pay for mercenaries to get squished either, well done,’ rambled the white Wizard, ending his ramble with a huge smile.

Epic encounters have been written to be challenging and it is the duty of the GM to balance the adventure with the player ability and bringing in extra help to tip the balance is allowed as you are in charge right, but balancing is always the best way and letting in extra help or allow aid to come if needed for either your team or Grimfang’ s Orc horde.

Life after Epic Encounters – Hall of the Orc King:

Expansions for Epic Encounters. There are several expansions available, but this set is twinned with Cavern of the Frost Giant.

Encounter Scenarios – these sets include a double-sided illustrated battle map although several are just a repeated map with a ninety-degree rotation and are either one large sculpt or up to twenty detailed unpainted miniatures. All include a full encounter booklet covering the background and scenario details and guidance to make an epic encounter.
