Epic Encounters – Caverns of the Frost Giant Review

Epic Encounters – Caverns of the Frost Giant Preparation:

It is still cold out, but it is time to dust off those mittens and thermals & go grab your shield once again and go sledding and to give a Frost Giant a good dusting down.

Caverns of the Frost Giant, designed to fit with DND 5th Edition. This unit contains a full encounter booklet, one very large unpainted miniature and illustrated battle map and 18 tokens of minions & traps. The unit is designed to be a flexible encounter and can be played as a standalone adventure, necessary element along the way, or a side quest in a campaign or the finale for Hall of the Orc King. The Games Master (GM) will need to have to assess the players levels and pitch the difficulty but reading the full encounter booklet rather than scanned over will give the depth of the scenario and characters to make it a truly Epic Encounter.

Epic Encounters – Caverns of the Frost Giant at play:

Caverns of the Frost Giant, the game is designed as a battle encounter for any games master role playing game, primarily for a DND 5th Edition adventure, modification would be needed to any other role-playing system. The players play co-operatively unless you are a sneaky spy, to complete the scenario objective. The scenario is outlined to stop the emboldened Frost Giant and Grimfang Orc minions from attacking local villages and put them back to where they belong, back in their cavern. A band of plucky adventurers could save the day, or they might of course just build a snowman and make snow angels or write rude messages while creating yellow snow. The GM manages the encounter, so if it is too challenging the scenario can be adjusted i.e. the Frost Giant and the minion Orcs have to be defeated, some extra help is likely needed to prop up your teams’ weak points as the party will eventually end in a full-frontal assault after sneaking around for a bit, so maybe a few thieves and assassins to find and disarm traps or prepare some of your own.

Booklets, Maps & Miniatures:

Caverns of the Frost Giant, booklet contains, a detailed scenario and background of the Caverns of the Frost Giant and the Frost Giant and minion abilities and behaviour in battle or play, as well as Frost Giant’s perspective on what it needs and what outcomes could be. The booklet provides guidance on difficulty, stats, and background from the caverns. The battle map is beautifully illustrated and on decent quality paper and is double sided with two different cavern layouts, but you will need to flatten it out. The Caverns of the Frost Giant has one very large Frost Giant miniature needing minor assembly and is unprimed & unpainted. Eighteen tokens, twelve Grimfang Orc tokens comprising of six in two separate designs, and six trap tokens comprising of two in three separate designs but are very nicely detailed but is more generous & detailed compared to the Local Encounter sets.

‘Why are we still here.’ asked with teeth chattering young Paladin, tugging at his sword to try and free it from the frosted scabbard.

‘The local bar keep has request we obtain the Orc beer,’ said the white Wizard.

‘How much is he paying.’ Said the young Paladin.

‘More then we earned last month,’ advised the white Wizard.

‘So, what’s the plan?’ Said the young Paladin.

‘When the mercs have knocked off the last of the Orcs, we will grab a small barrel of the good stuff,’ said the white Wizard winking theatrically.

‘But won’t the mercs drink it.’ Said the young Paladin.

‘Yes, but it’s super strong, there will be plenty left, as long as they don’t ignite it,’ said the white Wizard chuckling.

‘Boom, Crash, smash, ‘Arghhhh,’ ‘I’m on fire,’ ‘roll in the snow,’ ‘no not in the yellow snow,’ calamity from the mercs raiding and ransacking the Orc Hall.

‘Oh, for fudge cake, moronic mercs, well there goes our pay day,’ said the white Wizard with and exasperated sigh.

‘Well, I guess if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys,’ ‘but you were first to get a hair from a Frost Giant even if it was a curly black hair from the Frost Giant nether region for the white wizard challenge.’ Said the Paladin

‘Yeah, we won but we will be getting mocking messages for a while.’ Said the white Wizard.

‘Maybe, but we will have full bellies and maybe a tidy bed for a night or two.’ Said the young Paladin with a smile.

‘Well, I can’t argue with that logic, common let’s get back to that tavern and get a good spot by the fire, before the mercs realise they have spoiled the spoils of war already,’ said the white Wizard.

Epic encounters have been written to be challenging and it is the duty of the GM to balance the adventure with the player ability and bringing in extra help to tip the balance is allowed as you are in charge right, but balancing is always the best way and letting in extra help or allow aid to come if needed for either your team or Frost Giant.
