It has been just over a month since the release of Winterspell and Ravensburger but we already had so many amazing and exciting competitive events for Players to enjoy. Obviously Disney Lorcana is also a great game for Collectors and that's why Ravensburger set to release two new Premium products for Disney Lorcana this weekend: “ The Disney Lorcana Scrooge McDuck Gift Box” and the “Winterspell - Stitch Collection Starter Set”.
Both of these products are amazing opportunity to score some nice promo cards together with great accessories and some packs to open and, in my case, they also arrived at my front door on release day thanks to the generosity of the Ravensburger team. I was already super excited to get my hands on these two products and having them delivered just made my day and I couldn't wait to share what I found inside each of them, starting from the Scrooge McDuck Gift box.
Unwrapping the Gift Box - Contents
The Scrooge McDuck Gift Box is designed as a premium surprise bundle and includes items that can please both players and collectors. The main star of this product if obviously the “glimmer foil” promo card featuring “Scrooge McDuck – S.H.U.S.H. Agent”. This promo card is not only super shining due to the special foil treatment but it also showcases a new alternate art that matches the one on the box.
In order to keep enjoying this beautiful artwork, the Gift box itself is a great product for everyone as it double as storage box for up to 250 sleeved cards. The 3 punch-out card dividers included in the Scrooge McDuck Gift box are also a very good addition as they can be used in combination with the box (or a Trove) to help keeping your collection tidy.
Last but not least, the Gift Box comes with 5 Booster Packs randomly selected from the sets in rotation. I quite like the choice of ensuring the cards that Players can pull from the Box are playable in official events and not just in the Infinity format. My box included 2 packs from Archazia's Island, 2 from Reign of Jafar and 1 from Sail to the Azurite sea. I saw a few posts online where Players found a Whisper in the Well pack instead of the Sail one but I would be mindful that the pack selection varies from box to box.
Who is this Gift Box For and how to enjoy it?
Once the Scrooge McDuck Gift box opened, you are faced with the most classical temptation for a TCG fan: finding out what cards are hiding in the five packs enclosed. If you are reading this content you know very well the excitement of opening a pack and going through the cards while the tension builds up one card at a time preparing for the reveal of what is hiding in the last higher rarity slots. Opening the packs from the Gift Box is even more enjoyable as you are going to see cards from older sets you haven't seen in a while adding some nice excitement to the opening moment.
However, if you can resist a bit the impulse to open packs, you can also consider ways you can use those packs to play with your friends. Considering the Scrooge Gift Box comes with five packs, my son and I did a Pack rush using 2 packs each in order to win the right to open the last spare pack. If more than one person buys the Gift Box, you can also consider doing more rounds of Pack Rush and even potential a small Sealed using 5 pack instead of the usual 6 Packs per Player. You can also consider to allow all players to use the Scrooge Promo and to add a spare Winterspell pack to get to six packs. In the end, you will still open all your packs but using them right away to play with your friends definitely adds value to the Scrooge McDuck Gift Box.
Once you finished playing with the cards, you should then consider the collectible value of the product. Character-themed accessories are always a nice addition to the Disney Lorcana range and the new Gift box themed around Scrooge McDuck is definitely as exciting as the previous once featuring Lilo. The glimmer foil Scrooge promo in particular is unique to this product and collectors will only be able to get it from this box or by buying it from the market. At the time or writing, this promo is available in limited number for around £7 that is quite a good value considering the box itself sells for just above £20 including the five booster packs and the cards that can be pulled from them.
This last part is usually the most tricky one: to judge if these gift boxes are worth it. Personally, I find the possibility to have a nice promo and some fun playing Pack rush or sealed casually on a League night more than enough to justify buying the Scrooge McDuck Gift box. However, I know a lot of Players will also consider what cards they may or may not get from the packs. In my case, pulls were pretty bad to be honest with no Legendary or Enchanted and just a couple of Super Rare cards. However, the sets included in the Gift box are not bad at all and you have a chance to get some really good cards by opening those packs. For example, you can get “Tamatoa, Happy as a Clam” and “”from the Archazia's Island packs, or “Maui, Half-Shark”, “Tiana, Restaurant Owner”, and “Yzma, Conniving Chemist” from the Azurite Sea packs. All these cards are very playable and have a very decent value on the market making opening all these pack a potential source of good cards for quite a low price.
Overall, I think the Scrooge McDuck Gift box is a great product for both Players and Collectors, in particular if you are looking to complete any of the older sets and you can use the packs to play with friends at your locals. I am of course super grateful to Ravensburger for sending the Scrooge McDuck gift box for me to review but I will definitely consider buying another one (or more) to have more fun and a chance to have again a lot of fun playing Pack Rush.
