When people think of word games, Scrabble is usually the first one that comes to mind. It definitely is for us. As much as I love word games, it's also why a lot of our friends don't. Eventually someone gets stuck staring at the board, trying to squeeze a tiny word into an impossible spot while everyone else waits. You end up spending more time looking for a place to play than actually coming up with clever words.
Vocabularian takes a completely different approach. There's no board to fight over. Instead, everyone drafts letters into their own hand from a shared pool, then decides when to cash them in. Do you lock in a quick 5 letter word for steady points, or keep drafting
in hopes of building something massive? The challenge shifts from board positioning to hand management and timing, and it makes for a much faster, smoother word game.
Vocabularian by Waffle Sandwich Games: 1 to 6 players, 30 mins, word game, card drafting, push your luck.
What's in the box?
No board, just a small box with100 letter cards, scoring cheat sheet and a first player card
How it plays
The turn loop is simple and moves with zero downtime .
- Draft a Letter: Pick a card from the central pool and add it straight to your hand
- Hold or Spell: Once you hold at least five letters, you can start playing words to score points.
- Push Your Luck: Longer words are worth significantly more, turning every single turn into a quiet little.
gamble. Do you score a shorter word now, or hold onto your letters hoping to build something much bigger?
Most of the experience is surprisingly cozy. You're quietly focused on your own hand while keeping one eye on
the shared draft, hoping nobody steals the exact letter you desperately need
First player to reach 50 points wins.
Who is it for?
Vocabularian is a great fit for people who enjoy word games but get frustrated by fighting over board space. Everyone builds words from their own hand, so you're never waiting for someone to finish analyzing the board before you can take your turn.
I think that's why it's been such a hit with our friends. A few of them had written off word games because they didn't enjoy the gridlock that comes with games like Scrabble or the frantic pace of Bananagrams. Here, you're playing on your own terms. You choose which letters to draft, decide when to score, and whether to chip away with shorter words or hold out for one massive play. Both approaches feel equally viable.
It also scales well, is easy to teach, and the dyslexia friendly font makes it more approachable for a wider range of players. As a bonus, we've also played it in Spanish by allowing the N to also be used as Ñ.
Pros
- Easy to teach
- Lots of replayability
- Relaxed, cozy gameplay
- Small box, play it anywhere
- Dyslexia-friendly font
- Plays well at every count
- Language independent
- No grid frustration of traditional word games
Considerations
- The cards are tiny, shuffling needs creativity.
- The first player marker can move quickly, so it's easy to lose track when others (me) get too excited.
Bottom Line
Vocabularian is the kind of word game that lets everyone play at their own pace. Whether you're the person hunting for a fifteen letter masterpiece or you're happy cashing in short words, you still feel like you're in the game. It replaces board gridlock with drafting and risk management, making every turn feel like your own little puzzle. And don't think you're safe just because you're ahead. I learned that the hard way when the wife dropped ANTIPERSPIRANTS and erased my lead in a single turn.
Vocabularian is live on Kickstarter right now. If you've been looking for a word game that's approachable without losing its tension, this one is worth checking out.
