UK Games Expo levels up with 50,000 players expected

Crowded convention hall filled with booths, banners, and large groups of people browsing exhibits and games. What began as a small tabletop gaming event in Birmingham with around 900 attendees has grown into one of the biggest conventions of its kind in the world. The UK Games Expo now expects up to 50,000 visitors at its 20th show at the NEC, placing it alongside global giants like Spiel Essen in Germany and Gen Con in the US.

A hobby that’s exploded in popularity

Tabletop gaming has shifted firmly into the mainstream in recent years. Board game cafés are now a familiar sight across the UK, and the hobby has broadened far beyond its niche roots.

At UKGE, you’ll see everything from big-box strategy games like Terraforming Mars, to cooperative hits like Pandemic, storytelling games such as Gloomhaven, and fast, family-friendly titles like Azul and King of Tokyo. Alongside them sits the ever-growing world of roleplaying games and miniatures, from RPG campaigns to intricate skirmish games played out on detailed battlefields.

Events like UKGE have helped many of these games break through, giving players a chance to try them for the first time and helping smaller publishers find a much bigger audience.

Why people keep coming back

Part of the appeal is the social experience. UK tabletop gaming brings together people from all walks of life, all sitting around the same table working out rules, sharing laughs, and occasionally debating exactly how that one card is supposed to work.

Pop culture has also helped fuel the boom, from the renewed visibility of tabletop gaming in shows like Stranger Things to films and music-driven projects such as KPOP Demon Hunters, which have drawn renewed attention to modern card and board games like Monopoly Deal. The pandemic years also pushed many people back toward shared, in-person games - a habit that stuck.

Zatu Games at UKGE

We’ll be there too! Zatu Games will be attending UK Games Expo, joining thousands of players, publishers, and creators celebrating everything tabletop gaming.

Still rolling after 20 years

From a modest start to a massive event filling the NEC, UKGE has grown far beyond what its founders expected. And with the tabletop hobby continuing to expand, it’s clear the dice are still very much rolling in its favour.
