One of the most enduring strategy board games is getting a digital release, with Stratego confirmed for Steam later this year!
The classic game, which has sold more than 40 million copies since launching in the 1940s, is being adapted for PC by Wanted 5 Games. Players won’t have to wait long to get a first look either, with a demo set to arrive on June 11.
Hidden armies, familiar rules
At its core, Stratego remains exactly what fans would expect. Each player secretly arranges a 40-piece army on their side of the board, including a hidden flag that the opponent must track down.
From there, matches become a mix of movement, deduction and bluffing. Stronger pieces win fights, but the real challenge comes from working out what your opponent has placed where, and trying to protect your own key units in the process.
It’s a simple ruleset on paper, but one that has kept players coming back for decades!
Single-player and ranked play added
The Steam version expands beyond the traditional board game experience.
Alongside standard online matches, Stratego Online will include a single-player campaign made up of more than 15 missions set in a Napoleonic-era setting. Players can also practice against AI opponents, which should make it easier to learn the ropes before jumping into competitive matches.
For those who want a more structured challenge, a ranked ladder system will track progress all the way up to Grandmaster level.
Cross-platform support confirmed
Wanted 5 Games has also confirmed cross-platform play between PC, iOS and Android, meaning players will be able to face off regardless of device.
Friends can also challenge each other directly, or spectate matches as they unfold.
With the demo arriving on June 11 and the full release planned for later this year, Stratego is set to introduce a new wave of players to one of the most recognisable strategy games ever made!
