New board game lounge opens with optional phone prison!

A new board game lounge has opened in Maidstone, offering a simple idea: put the phones down and play some games.

Sett Games launched in February inside the Royal Star Arcade shopping centre, creating a space focused on screen-free gaming and social time. The venue is open to all ages and centres around classic board games, puzzles, and casual group play.

A Space to Switch Off (If You Want To)

One of the more unusual features is the so-called “phone prison” - small boxes on each table where visitors can leave their phones during a session.

It’s not a strict rule, just a suggestion for anyone who wants fewer distractions while playing. The idea is to make it easier to focus on the games and the people around the table, rather than notifications.

Plenty of Games to Choose From

The venue offers a mix of well-known titles and traditional games. Visitors can jump into familiar options like

  • Monopoly
  • Cluedo
  • Buckaroo

Alongside those, there are also strategy games like

  • Go
  • Chess

Players are also free to bring their own games if they’ve got something specific in mind.

A Casual, Drop-In Style Setup

Sett Games is designed to be easy to drop into, whether you’re planning a longer session or just passing through town.

The space itself is set up with shelves of games, tables for groups, and basic extras like notepads and pens for scorekeeping or puzzles. It leans more towards a relaxed hangout than a structured gaming venue.

There are soft drinks available to buy, and after 5pm, visitors can bring their own alcohol for a small additional fee.

Pricing and Opening Times

Entry is priced at £10 per person, with free admission for children under eight.

The lounge is open seven days a week, with later opening hours - until 11:30pm - from Wednesday through to Saturday.

A Simple Idea That’s Easy to Get Behind

Board game cafés and lounges aren’t anything new at this point, but Sett Games keeps things straightforward. It’s less about big events or complicated setups, and more about giving people a place to sit down, play something, and spend time together.

The “phone prison” idea might not be for everyone, but as an optional extra, it fits nicely with that overall approach.

If you’re local to Maidstone and looking for a low-key gaming spot, it’s another easy option to add to the list.
