As 2025 draws to a close, Kickstarter is buzzing with exciting news for fans of whimsical tabletop adventures. Everdell, the beloved critter-based city-building and worker placement game, is back with a new area to explore: the lush, untamed jungles of Emerland.
Designers James and Clarissa Wilson have been diligently expanding the Everdell universe, venturing to the cold, icy peaks of Silverfrost and the high seas of the Farshore (complete with pirates and parrots!). Now, they’re charting a course deep into the tropics, where we’ll discover new ruins, new characters, and a whole new civilization.
Tabletop Tycoon has introduced the latest standalone adventure, Everdell: Emerland, and its incredible popularity has already seen its Kickstarter goal far surpassed. Emerland is the newest entry in the Edge of the Map series, maintaining all the core Everdell elements while introducing fresh, vibrant mechanics designed to captivate both old players and newcomers.
The Lure of the Jungle: Theme and Aesthetic
Everdell: Emerland replaces the cozy, temperate tones of the valley with a lush jungle theme that brings a vibrant, exotic, and whimsical feel to the table. The landscape is bright and abundant, a perfect setting for archaeologists and adventurers.
Adding to the game’s signature visual appeal is the return of the artistic duo, Mr. Cuddington, a husband and wife team whose beautiful illustrations have defined the look of the Everdell series. Their artwork brings the towering canopies and ancient ruins of Emerland to life.
Players will find fantastic free constructions and treasures to discover in detailed 3D ruins, reminiscent of the classic tree from the original game, deepening the thematic immersion.
Exciting New Gameplay Mechanics
While the core city-building remains, Emerland introduces several clever mechanics to keep the resource gathering and engine-building fresh:
1. Enhanced Worker Placement with “Helpers”
In a key strategic shift, players can now use Helpers to access locations even if they are blocked by another player. This unique addition allows players to double their resource collection in a typically resource-tight game. This change is a welcome addition, particularly for new players, as it mitigates the harshness of being blocked out of crucial spots, while still maintaining the challenge of competition.
2. Card Upgrades and New Critters
A highly anticipated feature is the ability to upgrade your cards! A new character class allows players to tuck cards behind them to permanently improve their existing cards. The game boasts over 130 double-sided cards to explore this new dynamic.
The expansion of the original game introduces new Meeples, including adorable frogs, monkeys, and capybaras, who act as your new jungle dwellers, each bringing unique abilities to your burgeoning civilization.
3. New Resources and Market Dynamics
Get ready to forage for new materials! The game replaces classic resources with thematic jungle equivalents:
• Fig replace Berries.
• Bamboo replaces Wood.
• Marble replaces Stone.
• Leaves replace Resin
• Emeralds await to be unlocked in the ruins, adding a layer of risk and reward reminiscent of the pearls found in the Pearlboork expansion from the original name
The game also incorporates the use of dice for the market and resource unlocking, providing new variability to the supply chain.
Dedicated Solo Adventure
For the dedicated single player, Everdell: Emerland includes a robust dedicated solo mode. This campaign is built around themes of expedition, excavations, and trick-taking cards, ensuring that the grand adventure into the jungle is just as rich and engaging whether you’re playing with a group or enjoying a quiet evening alone.
This latest chapter is shaping up to be one of the most mechanically diverse and visually stunning entries yet. If you are ready to venture far west and unearth the secrets of the jungle, the Everdell: Emerland campaign is your ticket to a vibrant new adventure.
