Cluedo gets its own 50p coin with £2,000 gold prize up for grabs!

Cluedo has officially made the jump from the board game table to your pocket, with The Royal Mint launching a brand-new collection of 50p coins celebrating one of Britain's most famous mystery games! And because no Cluedo release would be complete without a little detective work, fans also have the chance to win a gold version of the coin worth more than £2,000. The collection has been created by The Royal Mint in partnership with Hasbro, with the coins officially launching on 28 September 2026. The release also marks 100 years since the first crime at the heart of Cluedo's story.

Who, where and with what?

If you've ever played Cluedo, you'll know the basic question. Who did it? Where did they do it? And what did they use? The new 50p takes inspiration from exactly that mystery. Its design features the six classic characters from the game: Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green and Mrs White. There is also plenty for collectors to discover. Microtext hidden within the design names characters, locations and weapons from Cluedo, meaning you might need to get the magnifying glass out to spot all the details. The official coin design was established earlier this year, featuring the six character tokens alongside a microtext background containing elements from the game and the phrase "WHO, WHERE AND WITH WHAT?". It is basically Cluedo in coin form, just without having to accuse Professor Plum of anything in the library.

Crack the case!

The coin itself is only half of the story. To celebrate the launch, The Royal Mint has started a free online competition called "The Case of the Missing Coin". Every week, a new clue will be released through The Royal Mint's website and social media channels. Participants have to work out the "who, where and what", identifying the suspect, location and type of coin involved. Anyone who successfully solves all three clues will be entered into a prize draw, with one lucky winner taking home a gold Cluedo 50p valued at more than £2,000. Entries close on 19 October, so aspiring detectives have a few weeks to put their grey matter to work. And yes, entering the competition is free. That's considerably cheaper than buying a magnifying glass and interrogating your family over who moved the candlestick.

A piece of Cluedo history!

Cluedo has been part of British gaming culture for decades, but its origins actually stretch back to the Second World War. The game was created by Birmingham-based musician Anthony Pratt during the wartime blackout. His wife, Elva, helped design the board, and the pair developed the murder mystery game as a way to pass the time during the long nights. Cluedo was eventually released in 1949 and has since become a household name, spawning countless editions, adaptations and spin-offs around the world. Anthony Pratt's daughter, Marcia Lewis, was involved in the new coin launch and visited The Royal Mint to see the production process. She said seeing the craftsmanship that went into the coin was particularly meaningful because it represents her father's creation in a completely new form.

From the board to the Mint!

The Royal Mint has increasingly used its commemorative coins to celebrate major pieces of British popular culture, and Cluedo joins a growing collection of entertainment-inspired releases. The Mint says commemorative coins can command prices above their face value because of factors including their materials, finish, presentation and limited availability. The Cluedo range includes different finishes and editions, giving collectors plenty to investigate. There is also an opportunity to experience the coin-making process for yourself. From 6 October, visitors to The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales, will be able to strike their own Cluedo 50p. This version features a magnifying glass positioned over a Cluedo game board.

A familiar face!

The launch has also brought Miss Scarlett back into the spotlight. Ellie Leach, who won Strictly Come Dancing and previously played Miss Scarlett in the stage production Cluedo 2, was given the chance to inspect the new coins. She said returning to the character for The Royal Mint was a fun challenge, particularly after playing Scarlett on stage. Marianne James, Hasbro's senior vice president of global licensing, also highlighted Cluedo's ability to bring different generations together through mystery, strategy and play.

Time to investigate!

The new Cluedo 50p gives fans another way to celebrate one of the world's best-known murder mystery games, while the competition adds a suitably sneaky twist to the launch. The collectable coins are available from The Royal Mint, with prices starting at £19.95, while the free competition gives anyone with a knack for solving clues the chance to win the £2,000-plus gold version. So, if you're a Cluedo fan with a keen eye for suspicious details, now might be the perfect time to put your detective skills to the test. Just remember the golden rule of Cluedo: accuse carefully.

You never know who might be holding the rope!
