Catan Turns 30 – how did we celebrate?

Catan has officially turned 30! The legendary board game that taught the world the joy (and occasional frustration) of swapping sheep for brick marked its big birthday in serious style, with an exclusive games night in Shoreditch hosted by artist and Catan superfan Sophie Tea.

Held inside Sophie’s creative studio, the celebration brought together influencers, creators, and devoted board game fans for an evening of strategy, laughter, and a whole lot of “friendly” competition.

The event wasn’t just about rolling dice and building settlements – it was about celebrating what Catan has meant to gamers over the last three decades. From casual players to hardcore hobbyists, the game has built an empire of fans worldwide, thanks to its perfect mix of strategy, social play, and that “just one more game” energy that’s impossible to resist.

Guests got the rare chance to play Catan in an intimate, art-filled setting, surrounded by vibrant colours, creative energy, and a shared passion for one of the most beloved tabletop games ever made. The vibe was equal parts chilled and competitive – think cosy evening with friends, but with the occasional gleeful shout of “I need one more wood!” echoing across the room.

Sophie Tea, who’s long been open about her love of the game, said:

“It was incredible to have fellow fans come together in my studio to celebrate Catan. Everyone was so engaged, and it was amazing to see people enjoying the game in such a creative space.”

And it sounds like the feeling was mutual. Attendees praised the event for its warm atmosphere, unique setting, and the chance to reconnect with Catan’s timeless charm.

Jo Duggan-Rees, Senior Marketing Manager at Asmodee, added:

“Hosting the Catan birthday celebration was a fantastic way to connect with our fans and showcase the game’s timeless appeal. We loved seeing players and influencers alike enjoying the experience and sharing their love for Catan. It’s wonderful to witness how the game continues to bring people together.”

Beyond the board, the night included giveaways, photo ops, and plenty of chat about trading tactics and expansion favourites. (Let’s be honest – we all have opinions about Cities & Knights.)

Here’s to 30 more years of trading, building, and battling for the longest road!
