Dice, drama, and a brilliant cause!
If you thought tabletop gaming was all quiet dice rolls and careful planning, think again! One of the UK's biggest Blood Bowl weekends has just wrapped up in Swindon, bringing together more than 150 coaches for a packed weekend of fantasy football, friendly rivalry, and some incredible charity fundraising.
Thrudball returned for its 20th edition this summer, once again proving why it's one of the standout events on the Blood Bowl calendar. Players travelled from every corner of the UK, while others made the journey from Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands to be part of the action. That's quite a trip for a game where goblins can launch teammates across the pitch!
The best part? The tournament is expected to raise close to £10,000 for charity, with the famous charity auction contributing more than £8,000 on its own. Raffles, donations, and plenty of community generosity helped push the total even higher.
More than just a tournament!
Winning games is only part of what makes Thrudball so popular.
The event has built a reputation for being one of the friendliest weekends in tabletop gaming. Families attend together, many players camp on site, and between rounds there's plenty of time to chat about hobby projects, admire painted miniatures, and hunt for bargains during the charity auction.
It's that relaxed atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year. In fact, tickets regularly sell out well in advance, making it one of the hottest events in the UK Blood Bowl scene. Since moving to Swindon in 2021, the tournament has continued to grow while keeping that welcoming community spirit alive.
What exactly is Blood Bowl?
For anyone unfamiliar with the game, Blood Bowl is Games Workshop's wonderfully chaotic take on American football.
Instead of professional athletes, coaches command teams of Orcs, Elves, Dwarfs, Skaven, Humans, and plenty of other fantasy races. Matches involve tactical positioning, risky dice rolls, and enough unexpected moments to keep every game entertaining.
One minute, your carefully planned drive is heading for a touchdown. The next, a Troll has forgotten what it's doing, a Goblin has been thrown halfway across the pitch, or your star player has been flattened by an angry Minotaur!
It's part strategy game, part sports parody, and it has built an incredibly passionate community over the decades.
Charity is at the heart of Thrudball!
While trophies are handed out at the end of the weekend, the biggest victory is always the fundraising.
Over the years, Thrudball has generated tens of thousands of pounds for charities. Since relocating to Swindon alone, organisers say more than £58,000 has been donated, with proceeds split between Mind and the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Every auction bid, raffle ticket, and donation helps make a real difference beyond the gaming table.
One of the highlights each year is the charity auction, featuring professionally painted miniatures, exclusive collectibles, limited edition dice, and unique hobby pieces donated by members of the community. Some of the items are genuine one-offs, making them highly sought after by collectors.
Swindon embraces the hobby!
Swindon has quietly become a fantastic home for tabletop gaming.
With local gaming stores, regular hobby nights, and an active Blood Bowl community, it's an ideal place to host an event that attracts visitors from across Europe. The venue also offers on-site camping, helping turn the tournament into a full weekend experience rather than simply six games of Blood Bowl.
Thrudball itself is also recognised as an official NAF tournament, meaning results contribute towards international player rankings, giving competitive coaches another reason to make the trip.

Reaching a twentieth event is an achievement in itself, but Thrudball has become something even bigger than a tournament.
It's a celebration of tabletop gaming, a showcase for an enthusiastic hobby community and, most importantly, an event that continues to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.
With another successful year in the books and fundraising totals once again climbing towards five figures, it's safe to say that Blood Bowl's biggest winners this weekend weren't just the coaches lifting trophies. The charities will be celebrating too!
