A Chilling World Steps Into Roleplaying
The eerie, frostbitten world of Beast is about to open its gates once more – this time as a full tabletop RPG built on D&D 5e foundations. Studio Midhall, creators of the acclaimed 2023 hidden-movement board game, is expanding its universe into a narrative-driven experience where players can dive deeper into its haunted forests, frozen valleys, and monstrous legends. To celebrate the transition from board game to roleplaying game, the design team Hhosted a live AMA session on the Wargamer Discord on November 17, inviting fans to learn more about the project and pose their own questions.
Heavyweight Talent Behind the RPG
Beast’s move into roleplaying is backed by serious experience. Chris Sims, who has contributed to three editions of Dungeons & Dragons – including both the 2014 and 2024 rulesets – brings a wealth of mechanical expertise to the adaptation. Meanwhile, Aron Midhall, co-founder of Studio Midhall and the artistic force behind the original board game, returns to ensure the RPG retains the chilling atmosphere and striking visual identity that made Beast stand out.
The Beast board game is set in the Northern Expanse, a breathtaking but deadly wilderness once believed empty. That illusion shattered when humanity discovered the truth: giant mythic creatures stalk the region, each with its own personality, abilities, and legend. In the board game, hunters track these monsters in tense, asymmetric scenarios. The upcoming RPG expands on this foundation, exploring the cataclysm known as the Shattering – an event that tore open reality and unleashed the titanic beasts upon the world.
Expanding the Lore: New Classes, Spells, and Horrors
The Beast RPG deepens the setting with new character options, including classes, subclasses, spells, and fresh interpretations of the great beasts themselves. It aims to blend 5e familiarity with a harsher, more atmospheric take on dark fantasy – one where survival isn’t guaranteed and every hunt feels personal.
The Kickstarter campaign promises further details, showcasing new art, world lore, and mechanics designed to capture the tension of stalking something vast and unknowable through snow-drenched wilds.
