Absolute Batman heads to the tabletop with new miniatures game

Batman stands in front of a city skyline, wearing armor with spikes. Text announces "Batman: Gotham City Chronicles" board game, coming Q4 2026.

A new tabletop adaptation is on the way for fans of DC’s darker storytelling, as Absolute Batman is set to become a miniatures board game expansion from Monolith Board Games later this year. The project arrives as part of Batman: Gotham City Chronicles – Season 4, continuing the publisher’s established line of large-scale, scenario-driven games.

The expansion draws directly from the Absolute Batman comic series by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, bringing its grittier reinterpretation of Gotham into miniature form. Set within the wider “Absolute Universe,” the game reflects a harsher version of the DC setting, where familiar characters are reimagined with new origins and power dynamics.

For those familiar with Batman: Gotham City Chronicles, the core structure remains intact. The game is built around asymmetric play, typically involving two to four players, where a team of heroes works together (or sometimes solo) to complete objectives while facing off against a more powerful villain player. It’s a system that has steadily expanded since its original release in 2019, with each new season adding more characters, missions, and components.

What Absolute Batman adds is a fresh layer of mechanics and theme. Notably, the expansion introduces vertical gameplay, shifting action onto Gotham’s rooftops as well as its streets. Alongside this, players can expect new miniatures, maps, and scenarios tailored to the Absolute Universe setting. The game also supports solo, cooperative, and competitive modes, offering flexibility depending on how groups want to approach it.

In terms of content, several characters from the Absolute line are already confirmed in miniature form, including Batman in his Absolute iteration, as well as figures like Black Mask, with hints that more major villains could follow. The source material itself has proven popular, with Absolute Batman becoming a strong performer in comic shops, helping anchor DC’s newer publishing direction.

The expansion is expected to launch via crowdfunding, a familiar route for Monolith, which has previously funded titles like Conan and its Mythic Battles series this way. While full campaign details—such as pledge levels and stretch goals—haven’t yet been revealed, the company has indicated a target release by the end of the year.

Overall, this looks like a natural extension of the Gotham City Chronicles line. By combining a well-established miniatures system with a newer, more intense take on the Batman mythos, Absolute Batman aims to offer existing players more variety while remaining accessible to those curious about jumping in for the first time.
