Otter Chaos: Brixton’s board game café where everyone gets to play

There’s something very satisfying about sitting down at a table with a group of friends, putting your phones away, and spending a few hours completely absorbed in a game.

That’s essentially what Otter Chaos is all about.

We’re a board game café tucked underneath Brixton station, created by a group of friends who wanted to build somewhere that combined our love of board games with something we felt was just as important: bringing people together.

Since opening, we’ve tried to make Otter Chaos somewhere that anyone can walk into and feel comfortable. You might arrive with a group of friends who have been playing games together for years, you might be looking for a slightly unusual date night, or you might turn up on your own hoping to meet some new people. All of those are completely normal nights at Otter Chaos.

500+ games… and someone who can actually help you choose one

Our game library has grown to more than 500 games, ranging from ridiculous party games that require very little explanation to sprawling strategy games that can occupy an entire evening.

And if the thought of choosing between 500+ games sounds slightly terrifying, don’t worry. That’s where we come in.

One of our favourite things about Otter Chaos is helping people find the right game for them. Tell us what you normally enjoy, how many people are playing, how much time you have and how complicated you want things to be, and we can usually find something that fits.

Then we’ll teach it to you.

You don’t need to spend 45 minutes hunched over a rulebook trying to work out whether you’re allowed to move your meeple before or after collecting resources. We’ll get you playing.

Some of our personal favourites include Snakesss, Ark Nova and Blood on the Clocktower, but with more than 500 games on the shelves, there’s a pretty good chance we’ll find something new for you too.

More than just a place to play games

The games are important, but the community around them is what makes Otter Chaos special to us.

Every Tuesday we run our Board Game Social, where you can come along with friends or turn up by yourself and join a friendly group. We have regulars who have met through these evenings and now come back week after week to play together.

It’s one of our favourite things to see: someone arriving not knowing anybody, being introduced to a group and a game, and then hearing them laughing together an hour later.

We also run Blood on the Clocktower every Wednesday, with beginner-friendly sessions led by an experienced storyteller, and Dungeons & Dragons every Thursday for everyone from complete beginners to experienced adventurers.

We also host Disney Lorcana events, tournaments, private parties and other gaming events throughout the year.

And you don’t have to be a “board gamer” to enjoy any of it.

One of our favourite pieces of customer feedback came from someone who essentially said they weren’t even a big gamer — but had an amazing time anyway. That’s exactly the sort of experience we’re trying to create.

Pizza, cocktails and a game or two

Of course, eventually you need something to eat.

Our kitchen makes hand-stretched sourdough pizzas, with options including vegan choices and gluten-free bases available on request. There’s also a selection of other food and snacks, alongside beer, cider, soft drinks, coffee and a cocktail menu.

Because if you’re going to spend three hours arguing over who absolutely should have won Catan, you might as well have a cocktail while you do it.

A community rather than just a café

We think what really sets Otter Chaos apart isn’t simply the number of games on our shelves or the fact that we’re a couple of minutes from Brixton station.

It’s the people.

Our staff genuinely love games and love helping people discover them. Our regulars know each other. New people are welcomed. And over time, a lot of the people who first came through the door just looking for something fun to do have become familiar faces.

That feeling comes through in the feedback we receive. Customers regularly mention our friendly staff, the cosy atmosphere and how helpful we are when choosing games. One visitor who came to a social night alone said that they’d since become a regular with many new friends. Another described the café as a great first-date alternative, while others have simply highlighted the relaxed atmosphere, huge game selection and welcoming team.

We’re incredibly proud of that.

So, should you come to Otter Chaos?

If you’re in London and love board games, we’d obviously love you to come and play.
But even if you’re not sure whether you’re a board-game person, that’s probably even more reason to give us a try.

Come with your friends. Come on a date. Bring your family. Turn up on your own. Tell us what you like and we’ll find you something to play.

You’ll find us at Arch 22, Atlantic Road, right underneath Brixton station. We’re open Monday–Thursday from 5pm–11pm, Friday from 2pm–11pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11am–11pm.

And if you’re coming for a particular evening, we recommend booking ahead — especially for our regular events.

You can find our games, events, menus and booking information at otterchaos.co.uk.

We’ll see you at the table.
