Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth

The Sylvaneth are the vengeful spirits of the forests and natural world in Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Led by the Goddess Alarielle, they are a race of tree-like beings, entwined with the magic of life and nature. While they are protectors of the natural order, they are also fierce and deadly when provoked, especially when the balance of the realms is threatened by the forces of Chaos, Death, or Destruction. The Sylvaneth are both nurturing and wrathful, symbolising the duality of nature’s life-giving and destructive powers.

Origins and Lore

The Sylvaneth are a deeply spiritual race, born from the essence of nature itself. They embody the natural world, drawing their strength from the Realm of Ghyran (the Realm of Life), and are closely aligned with its life-giving energies. They view themselves as the guardians of the natural order, standing against any forces that would seek to corrupt, exploit, or destroy the balance of life. Their ultimate loyalty is to Alarielle, the goddess who nurtures and leads them.

The Realm of Ghyran and the Birth of the Sylvaneth

The Sylvaneth are intrinsically connected to the Realm of Ghyran, a lush and fertile realm where the energies of life are at their strongest. Ghyran is a world of sprawling forests, verdant jungles, and teeming wildlife. It is from this abundance of life energy that the Sylvaneth were born. Alarielle, the goddess of life, shaped them from the soulpods of ancient trees, giving them purpose and life. Each Sylvaneth embodies a different aspect of the natural world, from the towering Treelords, representing the ancient and powerful trees, to the swift and agile Spite-Revenants, embodying the more predatory aspects of nature.

The Sylvaneth’s connection to Ghyran is vital to their existence. When the balance of life in the realm is maintained, the Sylvaneth thrive. However, when the forces of Chaos or Death invade, corrupting the land and draining its life force, the Sylvaneth suffer greatly. As a result, they have become fierce defenders of their realm, willing to wage war against any who would disturb the balance.

Alarielle, Goddess of Life

Alarielle, the Everqueen, is the central figure of the Sylvaneth. She is a deity who embodies the power of life, growth, and renewal. As the mother of the Sylvaneth, Alarielle leads her people in times of war and peace, nurturing the forests of Ghyran and healing the wounds of the land.

However, Alarielle’s character has evolved significantly throughout the Age of Sigmar. During the Age of Chaos, when the forces of Chaos invaded and ravaged Ghyran, Alarielle was driven into a deep despair, retreating from the world and allowing her realm to fall into decay. Yet, as Chaos continued to spread, she underwent a rebirth, emerging from her despair in a new, more warlike form. No longer the passive guardian of life, Alarielle became a fierce warrior queen, leading her Sylvaneth in a relentless war to reclaim and restore Ghyran.

Alarielle’s connection to the Sylvaneth is deeply spiritual. She nurtures their soulpods, guiding their growth and ensuring the continuity of the forests. The Sylvaneth, in turn, revere her as both their mother and their sovereign, following her will without question.

Spirituality and the Sylvaneth Way of Life

The Sylvaneth have a complex spiritual relationship with the natural world. They do not simply exist within it; they are part of it. They communicate with the trees, the wind, the animals, and the very soil of the land. Their society is built around glades, which are the spiritual heartlands of their race. Each glade has its own character and purpose, and the Sylvaneth of each glade are united by a shared purpose and set of values.

The Glades of the Sylvaneth

Sylvaneth society is divided into distinct glades, each with its own unique identity and fighting style. The most well-known glades include:

Oakenbrow: The Oakenbrow Glade represents the oldest and most venerable of the Sylvaneth. They are stoic protectors of the forests and prefer to focus on defence and healing, drawing on the ancient wisdom of the forests.

Gnarlroot: The Gnarlroot Glade is known for its deep knowledge of magic. These Sylvaneth are powerful sorcerers, capable of calling upon the primal energies of Ghyran to heal the land or devastate their enemies with powerful life magic.

Winterleaf: The Winterleaf Glade represents the harsher, colder side of nature. They embody the deadly, unforgiving aspects of the natural world, waging relentless war against the forces of Chaos, Death, and Destruction.

Harvestboon: The Harvestboon Glade is closely tied to the seasons of growth and harvest. They are swift and aggressive warriors, representing the unstoppable force of nature in its prime.

Each glade has its own war culture, aesthetic, and connection to the natural world, but they are all united in their devotion to Alarielle and their desire to protect the Realm of Life.

Key Characters of the Sylvaneth

Alarielle the Everqueen: Alarielle is the most important figure in Sylvaneth society, embodying the life-giving and destructive aspects of nature. Her presence on the battlefield is both inspiring and terrifying. As a god-queen, she can wield immense magical power, healing the land and her people or unleashing devastating destruction on her enemies.

In her reborn form, Alarielle rides into battle atop the Wardroth Beetle, a massive and ancient forest spirit. Her magic is tied to the cycle of life and death, capable of reviving fallen Sylvaneth or causing plants to erupt from the ground, entangling and crushing her enemies.

Drycha Hamadreth: Drycha is a unique and volatile character within the Sylvaneth, representing the violent and uncontrollable side of nature. In life, she was once a dryad, but her deep hatred for the forces of Chaos and her burning desire for vengeance against anyone who would harm Ghyran led her to be reborn as a monstrous, armoured war spirit. Drycha embodies the unrelenting rage of the Sylvaneth, lashing out against any who threaten her home.

Her hatred for the mortal races, even those who would be her allies, makes her a dangerous and unpredictable figure. She leads the Spite-Revenants, twisted and savage Sylvaneth who embody the predatory side of the natural world.

Spirit of Durthu: The Spirit of Durthu is one of the oldest and most powerful Treelords in the Sylvaneth ranks. In ancient times, Durthu was a wise and compassionate protector of the forests, but the long wars against Chaos have left him embittered and filled with rage. He now leads the Sylvaneth in battle, wielding his mighty sword with righteous fury against those who would defile the natural world.

Durthu’s connection to the forests of Ghyran gives him immense strength, and he is often seen as the embodiment of the ancient wrath of the forest itself.

Sylvaneth Units and Warfare

The Sylvaneth army represents the natural world fighting back against invaders. They are a highly mobile, resilient force that specializes in hit-and-run tactics, using their intimate connection with the land to outmanoeuvre and entrap their foes. Sylvaneth units can disappear into the forests and reappear where the enemy least expects them, using the terrain to their advantage.

Dryads: Dryads are the most numerous and common of the Sylvaneth warriors. They are the foot soldiers of the forest, swift and vicious in their attacks. In battle, Dryads swarm their enemies, using their numbers to overwhelm and tear apart their foes. While individually fragile, Dryads are deadly in large numbers, especially when fighting within forest terrain where they gain additional protection.

Treelords, Treelord Ancients, and Spirit of Durthu: The Treelords are towering, ancient spirits of the forest, representing the power and resilience of the natural world. These massive warriors are nearly indestructible, using their great size and strength to crush enemies underfoot or impale them with massive branches.

The Treelord Ancients are the wise leaders of the Sylvaneth, commanding the forests with their deep connection to the land. They can summon the energies of Ghyran to heal their allies or call upon the spirits of the forest to aid them in battle.

The Spirit of Durthu, as mentioned earlier, is one of the most powerful Treelords, representing the ancient rage of the forests.

Kurnoth Hunters: The Kurnoth Hunters are elite warriors of the Sylvaneth, representing the hunt aspect of nature. They are armed with massive greatswords, scythes, or bows, making them versatile combatants who can engage enemies at range or in close combat. Kurnoth Hunters are revered by the Sylvaneth for their skill and precision, and they are often seen as protectors of the glades.

Spite-Revenants: The Spite-Revenants are twisted and malevolent spirits, embodying the predatory and darker aspects of nature. They are led by Drycha Hamadreth and specialize in sowing fear and confusion among the enemy ranks. Spite-Revenants revel in the suffering of others, and their presence on the battlefield can cause enemies to flee in terror.

Tree-Revenants: In contrast to the Spite-Revenants, the Tree-Revenants are noble warriors, representing the more honourable and protective aspects of the Sylvaneth. They are capable of moving swiftly through the forest, using their deep connection to the land to strike where the enemy is weakest.

Sylvaneth Aesthetics and Miniatures

The Sylvaneth range of miniatures reflects their deep connection to nature, with models that emphasise the organic, flowing forms of trees and plants. Their aesthetic combines the grace and beauty of the natural world with the power and danger of predatory plants and ancient forests.

Dryads are depicted as lithe, bark-skinned creatures, blending elements of trees and humanoid forms.

Treelords and Treelord Ancients are massive, towering figures with intricate details, showing ancient, gnarled wood and foliage.

Kurnoth Hunters are imposing figures, carrying massive weapons made of living wood.

Alarielle is an awe-inspiring centrepiece, riding atop the massive Wardroth Beetle, a living embodiment of the forest’s ancient power.

The Sylvaneth miniatures are often painted in natural tones—greens, browns, and earthy colours—though they also lend themselves to more creative, mystical colour schemes that emphasise their magical, ethereal nature.

Conclusion

The Sylvaneth are the embodiment of the natural world’s wrath and beauty, standing as defenders of life in the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe. They are a force of nature, led by the goddess Alarielle, who will stop at nothing to protect the balance of life from the corrupting influences of Chaos, Death, and Destruction. With their powerful mobility, terrain manipulation, and resilience, Sylvaneth armies are a unique and dynamic force, representing the enduring strength of nature against all who would defile it.

Whether commanding the wrath of ancient Treelords or the swift strikes of Dryads, Sylvaneth players can enjoy an army that reflects the deep, primal power of the forest and the intricate balance between life and death
