Each Player represents a Taoist monk working together with the others to fight off waves of ghosts. The players, using teamwork, will have to exorcise the ghosts that appear during the course of the game. At the beginning of his turn, a player brings a ghost into play and places it on a free spot, and more than one can come in at the same time. The ghosts all have abilities of their own - some affecting the Taoists and their powers, some causing the active player to roll the curse die for a random effect, and others haunting the villager tiles and blocking that tile's special action. On his turn, a Taoist can move on a tile in order to exorcise adjacent ghosts or to benefit from the villager living on the tile, providing it is not haunted. Each tile of the village allows the players to benefit from a different bonus. With the cemetery, for example, Taoists can bring a dead Taoist back to life, while the herbalist allows to recover spent Tao tokens, etc. It will also be possible to get traps or move ghosts or unhaunt other village tiles. To exorcise a ghost, the Taoist rolls three Tao dice with different colors: red, blue, green, yellow, black, and white. If the result of the roll matches the color(s) of the ghost or incarnation of Wu-Feng, the exorcism succeeds. The white result is a wild color that can be used as any color. For example, to exorcise a green ghost with 3 resistance, you need to roll three green, three white, or a combination of both. If your die rolls fall short, you can also use Tao tokens that match the color in addition to your roll. You may choose to use these after your roll. Taoists gain these tokens by using certain village tiles or by exorcising certain ghosts. One of the Taoists has a power that allows him to receive such a token once per turn. To win, the players must defeat the incarnation of Wu-Feng, a boss who arrives at the end of the game. There are also harder difficulty levels that add more incarnations of Wu-Feng, in which to win, you must defeat all of them. There are many more ways to lose, however. The players lose if three of the village's tiles are haunted, if the draw pile is emptied while the incarnation of Wu-Feng is still in play, or if all the priests are dead.

Oceans is a set collection game where each player captains a submarine and tries to collect different animals, coral, and treasure. And that's adding more pandas! Designer Antoine Bauza knows how to tug at heartstrings. Chibis (Japanese slang for 'something short', as in, a small animal) is an expansion for the superb gateway game Takenoko and it introduces not only a mama panda, but also baby pandas. The latter of which can be earned if both pandas cross paths in the Emperor's garden! Takenoko: Chibis isn't just a cute overload for cute-overload's sake, though. Also in this expansion lies six additional hexagonal garden plot tiles (plus extra bamboo pieces to compensate) as well as 18 extra Objective Cards. Together these add a wonderful extra level of strategy into the mix, which is ideal for those who feel they have mastered the base game of Takenoko - which, in its own right, is an excellent gateway game for folks new to the world of board games. Remember, Takenoko is a race of sorts. The end-game is triggered once someone has completed seven (in a four-player game) Objective Cards. The beauty lies in that the Objective Cards are all worth varying victory points depending on how challenging they are to complete. Do you rush to complete low-value ones? Or work tirelessly to complete the harder, more valuable ones? On your turn you'll roll the Weather Die to see which bonus you'll get, then you get to either extend the Emperor's Garden, move the panda and eat bamboo, move the gardener and grow bamboo, gain irrigation pieces, or take another Objective Card. The main rule tweaks that come in Chibis are to do with those new garden tiles. Some tiles have the mama panda symbol on them - she doesn't start in the garden until one of these tiles is placed. Then, instead of opting to move the male panda as one of your actions, players can move the female. If she and the male panda land on the same hex, the player can discard one bamboo shoot to acquire a baby panda token (imagine Sir David Attenborough narrating that). The babies (the Chibis, themselves!) offer not only end-game victory points, but also immediate benefits, such as being able to exchange unwanted Objective Cards, or gaining sought-after irrigation or hex-improvement chits. That, and being ridiculously cute! Other unique garden hex tiles include a plot that grows all three types of bamboo, a 'Sacred Hills' spot that, when the gardener lands on it, grows bamboo on all matching colour plots, a second pond (which really helps irrigation networks!), and the gardener's cabin, where players can visit to gain more Objective Cards. Takenoko: Chibis is not a wild leap up in difficulty, strategy-wise - it's more of a pleasant hike. It's still the same bright, colourful, fun Takenoko - trying to build and grow the garden in a way that suits the hungry panda best to match your Objective Cards. Like many expansions, once you've tried Chibis, you'll find it tough to go back to 'vanilla' Takenoko! Set in the Japanese Emperor's garden, 2-4 players will compete in an action points allowance system, where they are aiming to complete secret mini-missions - whether that be feed the panda or grow the garden to a particular size (or height). The garden in Takenoko starts out as one hexagonal pond tile. Two pre-painted minis - the panda and the gardener - begin here. This garden will grow in a modular fashion through the game as player attempt to race to complete seven Objective Cards (in a four-player game). There are five different actions players can pick from on their turn. They have to pick two different actions from the following:

Draw three garden plots (hex tiles), pick one to lay into the garden and discard the other two.
Take an irrigation channel from the reserve.
Move the gardener in a straight line (thus increasing the bamboo to grow in that plot as well as on adjacent tiles of the same colour).
Move the panda in a straight line ('eating' - removing - a piece of bamboo from that tile).
Draw a face-down Objective Card.

The key to Takenoko is completing those Objectives. They range from feeding certain types or quantities of bamboo to the panda (there are common green tiles that grow green bamboo, less-common yellow, and rarer-still pink), to having certain alignments of garden terrain (such as a row of 3x yellows, for example), to having a certain amount of bamboo grown in a certain tile. Rather deliciously, these objectives butt heads somewhat, because while Player A is trying to grow bamboo using the gardener, Player B might be more interested in feeding it to the panda! To add spice, tiles have to be within an irrigation network in order to grow bamboo, so tile placement is a real consideration. Some tiles will also have symbols on them, meaning that bamboo grows at twice the rate, or perhaps it cannot be fed to the panda at all. These symbols can also be acquired to place on plain tiles, meaning you can control the layout to a degree. There is no limit as to how many Objective Cards you complete on your turn, but your hand size is limited. Helpfully, on your turn you also roll a Weather Die, which will inform you which of the six bonuses the weather gives you (ranging from an additional third action to select, to having the option to take the same action twice, and so on). Takenoko is wonderfully vivid. And since there are literal bamboo towers that you'll build, along with a cute, mini panda moving about, it gathers lots of attention from curious passers-by. Gameplay is simple to grasp, and games last about 45 minutes. Simply put, Antoine Bauza's Takenoko ticks every box going for being a brilliant gateway game! It's a fantastic card-drafting game with a strong set collection vibe, with each set scoring in different manners after three rounds. One of the extremely appealable selling points about this is the number of people that can play - you can't call a game 7 Wonders and not have it accommodate up to seven players! Players each start with an asymmetrical ancient city board, and across three 'Ages' they will look to acquire technology, materials for trading, as well as building up their military to attack (or defend against) their neighbours. Everyone also starts with a hand of seven cards from the First Age deck. Simultaneously, players pick one card to keep, and they pass their remaining hand to the player on their left. Then everyone reveals their card, before looking at their new hand of cards, picking one, and passing their hand on again. Once all of the First Age cards have been claimed, the Second Age deck (with more powerful cards) is shuffled and dealt out, and the same process occurs, and then the Third Age (again, more powerful) deck. However, 7 Wonders has more meat to it than merely selecting the best card in your hand. Each card has a cost of various materials that you have to have access to, in order to add it to your tableau. Some cards have material-generating traits to them, so you can use these to then acquire a card from your hand. Or, you can use the materials in either of your immediate neighbour's tableau - but you have to pay them coins for this. Some cards can be upgraded for free, which are hugely attractive. You'll also be keeping an eye on your neighbour's army - at the end of each Age you will square off in battle, with the victor earning points and the loser gaining negative points. With everyone's cards being shown face-up, you can absolutely see what potential plans they might have in store, meaning you will spend the game second-guessing their moves and which cards are more valuable to them than others! We'd call 7 Wonders something like Sushi Go's older sibling. The mechanics are similar, but there's a lot more to chew on, here. The cards costing resources are such a great touch - it forces you to be highly interactive with the players on both your left and right throughout the game. Games tend to last about 30 minutes, and there are some fantastic expansions out there that add lots more drama and variety to gameplay - 7 Wonders: Cities and 7 Wonders Babel are both very popular, and in 2018 Antoine Bauza released another add-on: 7 Wonders: Armada. And, of course, there is the separate, standalone, two-player variant - 7 Wonders Duel.
