This time, the Disney villains sit to one side. Here the baddies from the Marvel universe take the centre stage! This is Marvel Villainous: Infinite Power. The core concept of Marvel Villainous remains the same as Disney Villainous. Each player takes on the role of one of the classic villains from the Marvel comic book franchise. You could be any one of Thanos, Hela, Ultron, Killmonger or Taskmaster. This game scales for two to four players, despite there being five different villains. Your aim, should you be so evil to accept it, is to dominate the Marvel universe! Every one of the five villains has an asymmetrical win condition. On your turn you move your villain to a different location on your player board. Then you undertake the dastardly actions stated there. Usually this involves hand management. When you play cards to your own board, or others, this manipulates your attempts to inch towards global destruction. Over the course of the game, a whole host of familiar villains and heroes from the world of Marvel enter the fray. This occurs when they get played (or revealed) from the Fate Deck. One of the big changes in Marvel Villainous over the Disney version is here there's a shared Fate Deck. (Instead of players having their own individual Fate Decks.) Will the twisted fates smile upon you? Will you cackle as darkness looms over all? Or will another villain thwart you? There's a multitude of differing game modes. These allow flexibility with regards to adjusting the difficulty. Because of these beginner and advanced options, Marvel Villainous: Infinite Power has the scope to appeal to all kinds of board game fans. The aim of the Tribes is to gain more bear teeth (in-game victory points) than any other player. Setting up the game, players place the fifteen achievement tiles and shuffled event tiles in their outlined spaces on the board. All of Tribe's action takes place via its action tiles, which are placed at the top of the board in a random order. These determine the actions available to players, with actions later in the sequence costing more shells to play.

When a player takes an action, the relevant tile is then moved to the back of the sequence and the next player takes an action. Starting with three land tiles each, players explore the land surrounding them, procreate, move, and quest to claim achievements. This allows players to discover new territories, add tribespeople from their pool of 15 meeples, improve their access to resources, and gain victory points and reveal and new achievement tile.

Because of the ever-changing sequence of action tiles, Tribes requires players to be highly adaptable in order to succeed. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance's hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root. Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: the Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible. The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts. The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling. The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal. The original was just about famous people. As such, this version works a little better with families. Not that you need to know who the person is, but it does help to ease peoples concerns. In Obama Llama 2, players split into two equal teams. The game scales perfectly to any player count and players who don't want to have the limelight on them can play as the guessers. On your turn, you are running through one of three types of cards as fast as you can. Trying to get your team to guess the rhyme. This can be either 'Describe it,' 'Solve it,' or 'Act it.' This is determined by the roll of a dice.Describe it cards put a character such as Ronnie Corbett, Michael Jordon or the Pied Piper in a situation where they are all doing something that conveniently rhymes with their surname. Corbett in Orbit, Jordan is a prison warden and The Pied Piper is feeling hyper, for example. The describers have to try and make their team say what is said on the card as best they can by detailing what is going on without using the words written on the card. "A famous UK comedy due, big in the 80s, famous for a sketch about fork handles, well one of them is now flying in space," for example. Solve it works similarly to this, but you are given the description on the card as well as the answer. Act it works as a game of charades but each answer on the card is about the same thing or person, and this is written on the back of the card. What is taken away in words, is replaced in knowing the subject at hand. The Pope Walking a tightrope is hard to act out, but if your team know it is about the Pope, then the rest should come more easily! Each card you get right earns your team the right to mark off a circle on the score sheet. For every three marks scored off your team can try and find a match of two symbols in a deck of cards that have been laid out on the table. Anomia is clever in the fact that it knows that our minds are always thinking about something. What are you thinking about right now? I bet you're thinking about nothing now that I've made you ACTUALLY question yourself. But that's the thing, you are still thinking of something, even if not subconsciously. I know. The brain is a powerful thing.

When you have some time to think about things, or you aren't put on the spot, normal thoughts are easy to process and think about. But when put on the spot and under pressure, it makes things suddenly almost impossible for you to do. For example, if I asked you to name me a dog breed, with no pressure around the question, you could probably list of 2 or 3. But if I randomly shouted it at you with, for example, a prize or a timer against it, you would start to question the amount you actually know.

Well, that's enough of my waffle out of the way, here's how to play. Super simple. You draw and reveal a card from the centre pile of cards. This is a wonderful family board game from designer Chenier La Salle and Blue Orange Games. New York 1901 is a fun, lightweight strategy game with wonderful physical presence on the table. Centre of it all are the famous Manhattan skyscrapers. Watch them climb skyward before your very eyes... New York as a city started life in a far more modest state, but you're about to help change that. A new dawn is approaching NYC, and you're going to help construct some iconic skyscrapers. The action takes place in Lower Manhattan, in the Financial District. The aim is to score the most points, by building bigger and better towers. You do this by drafting cards, and tile-placement. The main board is set up like a series of empty city blocks, all split into grids. Players start with a selection of building tiles shaped like polyominoes. On your turn you can claim a card from the public flop to claim a matching size/space within the city. Plus, you can then place one of your building tiles within your claimed land. (Providing the tile doesn't overhang, and that it's touching a road.) To start, you place bronze, simple buildings. Later you can demolish these, and building on top of the land with silver, and (later on) gold buildings. These tiles increase in value, but at the same time they're larger, so tougher to place. You need to play smart to buy land that's adjacent to one another, to build such valuable skyscrapers. There's also Legendary Skyscrapers up for grabs! New York 1901 has all the ingredients needed for being a gateway-plus game. The cherry on the top is the gorgeous artwork from Vincent Dutrait. (Ice school, ice cool... get it? Don't worry, it took us a moment to realise that one, too!) However, we'd argue that ICE COOL fits into the same bracket as other dexterity games such as Rhino Hero or Animal Upon Animal, where adults enjoy them just as much - if not more so - than the initial intended audience! The premise in ICE COOL is simple. Players take turns to flick their weighted, plastic penguin around a physical college layout, complete with doorway arches. Up to four players participate in as many rounds as there are players, where one player is a penguin hall monitor, trying to catch (bump into) the other players are playing truant - they're more interested in hunting the school for fish. Every time a penguin goes through certain doorways they'll get a fish (and take a fish card, worth varying points). Every time the hall monitor player bumps into a naughty penguin, they'll 'confiscate' their hall pass, and also earn a fish card for their snitching. The round ends when either one truant penguin has collected all their fish, or when the hall monitor has confiscated all the hall passes. Then fish are returned to the starting set-up, a different player becomes the hall monitor and everyone plays again. (Everyone will have one round of being the hall monitor.) Whoever's collected the highest total of fish on their cards wins the game. Even the box is a work of genius. Brian Gomez and Brain Games have designed a 'boxes-within-boxes' creation - the various rooms that help construct the icy arena all sit snug within each other in the main box. Each one is a few millimetres narrower than its predecessor, so they sit like Russian dolls. Rooms are clipped together on your table with wooden fish pegs, which is a neat touch. It quite literally is a big game in a modest-sized box (and it can be combined with ICE COOL 2 to make a humongous layout). The penguins are adorable plastic models with spherical bases. They're weighted appropriately so they wobble when off-kilter - much like one might imagine a cliched penguin might teeter when scooting around the slippery tundra. Not only does this fit thematically, but it also makes for comical high drama because sometimes they act in unpredictable manners. Once you've played a few times, you'll get cocky and attempt trick shots, flicking your penguin deliberately with a hint of left-hand side, in attempt to curve it around a corner. You can even flick them in ways where they can jump! You'll either pull amazing moves, or you'll fail and hilarity ensues... Don't say we didn't warn you. Given how competitive some adults are (sibling rivalries, anyone?), the chance to take on the in-laws, or the neighbours?), you can imagine how ICE COOL can - and will - become the smash hit of the evening at your games night.
